No more faking it? Like that? While it would be fun to make a living off of comics, that's really not why I'm doing them. I enjoy my job, if not my company, and it pays perfectly well. Someday, maybe the comics will just demand more out of me, and then I'll have to reevaluate my priorities, but unti...

Doing one per month, I really don't have to be quick. It doesn't take too long, though. Maybe 10-15 minutes to do an initial sketch (I never sketch unless I have an idea, so I don't count the thinking stage). 20-30 to cut the bristol and do the pencils. 30-40 minutes to ink. Scanning and associated ...

I want to put some of them higher on the triangle, toward the abstract point. Things like Subject to Subject, for instance, seem to me to be moving in that direction.

Currently, my chief sources of inspiration are George Herriman and Patrick McDonnell. For comic books, Will Eisner and Peter Milligan. In comic strips I'd like to achieve Herriman wild imagination and McDonnell's charm. I'm drawn to the sketchiness of both, artwise. In comic books I have a strong ne...

If I scan my stuff in as a black and white document, it levels out the background to a solid white. That makes the rest of the process very easy.

Of course, you can lose some of the finer lines this way, but my drawings are pretty basic and bold so it works for me.

Load time is the curse of the web... 350 K seems fairly reasonable for a JPEG of that size and texture, although I think that tweaking could reduce it a bit. Also, I bet that the images are just as vivid and detailed at half their current height and width. Banner ads never help matters. The art was ...

Heck, bad artwork never stopped me.

I think you'll find that, whatever approach you decide on, your skills will improve rapidly as you keep doing the strip.

That's not a lot to go on, but the easiest answer could be that the image was a GIF with transparency between the panels.

Adobe Photoshop does this handily, and I imagine other image software does as well

It's true.

The DC Guide won't make a writer out of you, but it points out some very useful approaches that should be obvious but that need to be pointed out.

There's nothing earth-shattering in its content, but it's a great book to refocus your thoughts.
