Newsletter

This isn't really about finances, but is a meta-meta comic topic, so here goes. Recently, I happened to follow a link on the Chopping Block webpage that led to the Solitary Confinement event. As it turned out, it was something I really wanted to do (and I did it). The thing is, I don't usually follo...

Work and Creativity

I haven't got a job at the moment, and that means my life is a shambles. I can't concentrate on anything. I have barely enough time in the day to check my email, let alone work on my comic. I'm definitely not producing my best work now. In fact, I'm barely producing any work. I'm definitely not job-...

Death of MAD

I think MAD is ending with a whimper, rather than a bang... but that it must end. Our culture is now immersed in sarcasm and silliness, it is now stark, tactless honesty and openness that reaches the masses. MAD was needed, once upon a time. It will be needed again, and it will appear again in anoth...

Haiku

I understand that, it's a lot like what I do. I keep to an identical 4-panel layout every day, as a kind of haiku-like limitation. I find it's more of a challenge, but it also helps move the story along.

I wouldn't want to do it forever, though.

Fine line between criticism and insults

Okay, I'm going to check everything out, and comment in this box as I do so, you'll be getting my reactions as they happen. Hmm, the site is full of ovals. That's an okay thing, but they aren't anti-aliased, it looks like you did them in Paint. Which you probably did. Nothing wrong with that, per se...

Scripting

I just do a rough version of the comic in pencil-- showing who's standing where and what they're saying-- and then the actual comic is pretty much just a good copy of that. I suppose, if you could tolerate my horrible handwriting and sketchy art, you could just read my scripts and get the same story...

Refusal to be Categorized

Some stories can't be pinned down in time and space. 1/0, for example, has no real time or location. The project I have waiting in the wings has no genre, as it is actually 8 stories in one.

Well, it's interesting, I'll give it that. I think it might be tough, though, to be sure you'd seen everything.

I say "go with it". I would. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, many cartoonists would kill to be where you are.

Web

I think that web comics and print comics are like two circles that intersect each other. Some comics work well in either format, some are better in print, and some are better on the web. Definitely, it's easier to get on the web than to get into print. For someone just starting out (like most Keensp...

Hamlet

I'm voting for Hamlet because he seems more passionate. In an actual sword-fight (the subject of this quandary), he'd have vigour and verve and whatnot. Plus, I just like Hamlet a whole lot more. I mean, that soliloquy... he's deep. A philosopher, even. In modern terms, he'd be an angsty goth, where...

Inferiority

Remember, these aren't human. The female lines are legitimately intellectually inferior. It's not a matter of oppression-- their females are genuinely dumber and more unstable than their males. Is discrimination wrong in that case? Sure, it's a bad thing for us humans, who have biological sexual equ...

English

I've been speaking English my whole life, and I've never seen "logorreah". It looks like a cross between the Greek "logos"(word) and the English "diarreah"(uncontrollable liquid excrement), which forms a disgusting but accurate mental picture.

It helps that they come with definitions.
