Okay, you asked for it. I was on the way to Massachusetts for the world premiere of a short play I had written some ten years earlier. Kevin Pease was with me as he had co-written it with me and we were both ready to break out of our routines, at least for one weekend. The trip was uneventful until ...

I don't recall ever doing a TMBG reference in my comic, Dada, but then again I have done 244 at this point. It's always possible that I've slipped one in without noticing. For my part, I have done a lot of strips about Yoko Ono and the Onobox , her 6 CD box set. Looking back, I've also referenced Je...

Commiseration loves company

I hear you, Tailsteak. I lost my job about two months ago and, while I've been halfheartedly seeking employment, I've also been trying to keep working on my personal projects. Doing Dada on a daily basis has been one of the things that has kept me going, but that's not enough to make me feel product...

As a scripter, I've tried a number of different methods. In each case, I tried to make the method match the project. When I had my first comic strip in college -- which someone else had to draw for me -- I scripted out every strip, panel by panel, in some cases months in advance so she could draw th...

15-Minute Macbeth

I can answer your second question. No, there is not a 15-Minute Macbeth (at least, not by Tom Stoppard). The 15-Minute Hamlet hails from a series of pieces Stoppard wrote for an adventurous theater group in the '70s. Eventually they all came together as Dogg's Hamlet, Cahoot's Macbeth, with Dogg's H...

15-Minute Hamlet

Have you ever seen the film that was made out of this? Bravo used to show it from time to time and I actually managed to tape it once. It's rather well done, even if the entire film is 22 minutes (sorta defeats the 15-minute thing).

Definitely the Scottish guy. Of course, as the play progresses, the character of Hamlet becomes less and less humane and more and more aggressive, but Maccers has still got him beat in terms of ruthlessness and first-strike capabilities.

Not comics-related, but...

...it is comic. The webzine Pork Pony has seen fit to publish an odd little story of mine called "Take, Take, Take" (the beginning and end of which may sound familiar to those who have been following Dada). If you find you're so inclined, go to www.porkpony.com and click on STORIES. Mine is on the r...

Patience

Sometimes I wonder about the merits of instant, public feedback. When Scott started his Morning Improv experiment, it was fun to watch each comic develop at its own pace. If something didn't make sense right away, usually all you had to do was wait around for a couple days and he would add enough pa...

This is weird.

Edit: Actually, isn't it there all ready? I thought I had moved them all and I just checked- I do see the note with your comic, here: http://www.zwol.org/archive.php3?nocontest=20010324 Does it come up for you? Actually, yes, but now I'm looking at it from home (and on Netscape). For some reason, i...

Greg-- As you've overhauled the archive system, I was updating the link to my No Contest strip when I noticed that the text that accompanied it is no longer archived on the same page. Personally, I liked the way that the text and the comic for the same day went together, but I guess that's not how i...

Speaking as a former telemarketer (I only did it for one summer during college, and that was so I wouldn't have to go back to working in fast food), I can tell you that -- as with fast food -- a high employee turnover rate doesn't affect a telemarketing company's profits all that much. They don't ha...

Young Zaphod Plays It Safe

I don't know if he wanted ambiguity, but he got it. He said that he had someone specific in mind, but I personally like the theory that it is someone else. Who do you think it was? I was always confused by the ending of "Young Zaphod Plays It Safe" until I read the version in Wizards of Odd, a shor...

Revisioning and retitling

Well, this didn't change the ending for me so much as it clarified what I already thought happened. It's still not about "revenge," per se, but then again Scott wasn't given the title "The Circle's Regret." Speaking as someone who frequently has a title first before I do any writing, I know what it'...

For Dada, I don't have to worry about coming up with names for my characters since most of them already have names (e.g. David, Mona Lisa, and others that are still in the future). When it comes to a character like Hugh the Manatee, though, that's a different story...

Taking out of consideration the completely one-joke improvisations (the Robots, Man-eating shoes, Inertia man, Interesting Jeff, Most beautiful Dog), we're left with the Meadows, Brad's somber mood, Happy Town, Proto, Flap those Flagella, and When Luna smiles... Well, I wouldn't take the one-joke i...

When it comes to naming characters (for a comic or a play), I use whatever method I feel like at that moment. If I'm stuck, sometimes I'll look in the phone book. Other times -- mostly to amuse myself -- I'll play word games. For example, for The Olive (which is archived here if you happened to miss...

In my case, my comic is created entirely in Photoshop. I don't draw anything -- mostly because my drawing skills are rudimentary at best -- but rather manipulate images that I've grabbed from other sources. Add in dialogue and whammo*, I've got a comic. It's unique to the internet, but that's mostly...

Yes, Anthony, Uranus does have a ring (several, in fact), but the planet that Jack got hit with was Neptune. And you're not fooling anybody. You did make a joke. I saw you.

At any rate, I'd say that applying "laws" of any kind to this ramshackle story is a losing proposition, at best.

This file is about about three times as large as my last one, but I think the results are worth it: I'm fairly certain it follows Randy's last card, but as I've been unable to see it since yesterday, this may not, in fact, be the case. Edi...
