Scott McCloud wrote:Those are imported PNG's (like gifs but not owned by stupid, stupid compuserve creatures) that were drawn directly in Photoshop.
I confess that I don't know the story about these stupid, stupid creatures. Are GIFs pretty bad? Are they doing subversive stuff inside my computer RIGHT NOW?!

I miss the old days when the Improv was hosted by Millard Fillmore, but I have to admit that the non-frame design is much more visually satisfying and pleasing to use.

When the European Union agrees on a constitution, it will likely dispense with any mention of God. As I understand it, there is no god in the U.S. Constitution either. Book Description Yount examines the state of Christian faith in America today and assesses its prognosis for the future. According ...

The majority of religions in the world all think that theirs is the only way. There are very few religions that say "well, we are one of the many roads to eternal bliss" . But the very nature of religion, and a belief in a world after this leads us to believe that someone is going to be right, and ...

Muslims would not take your quotes from Genesis as evidence of a trinity, because the Qur'an is seen as GOD setting the record straight. Muslims tend to believe that the Hebrew and Greek texts were corrupted over time, and they think there is pretty good evidence that the Arabic is still pretty clos...

That's because they were Moors, and not Arabs [...] I talk out of my ass half the time. Your first sentence triggered my racist radar southern honky style - until I read your last sentence. A good test for ridiculous prejudice in a statement is to substitute another group: That's because the...

I was just listening to a sermon on that subject the other day. The man said that we often hear that if you get into the bible you will get your act together. But if you never do what the bible says, you will never benefit from reading it. Of course that goes for whatever sacred text all of you cho...

I just finished watching an interview on NOW with Bill Moyer where they interviewed a lady who wrote a book called "What is Wrong With Islam". She was saying that Islam had a long tradition of free thought and free exchange of ideas, and that is was very common for there to be large salons where pe...

But on the other hand, man is a complex creature. I get the impression that you also believe that there is part of us that is ancient and eternal. A spirit, a soul, whatever you want to call it has been formed inside a body and mind. That's a fair impression. I would say that the body and mind are ...

Re: "literally" is relative?

As to where it came from originally, I can only guess. A natural tendancy of some people to exaggerate? "Literally" and "figuratively" are maleable words, especially when you look at the specialized meanings they have in literature and art. It isn't so hare to imagine a lliterary figure being liter...

Religion has been a part of human life ever since humans could be distinguished from other animals. It's intimately connected to the way we create symbols and do everything else in life. Atheism is a new experiment, and being interested in the pursuit of Truth, enlightenned atheist and theists mustn...

The crummy thing about not being logged in is that you can't edit your post. I'd be interested in Scott's answer to this. I don't know if you're religious at all, but every time I read something by Sky, I think you're doing something right. Maybe the best thing we can do is immerse our children in love, wisdom, and beauty.

How are you handling raising your daughter when she asks to explain spiritual things? She's three years old. It looks like eastern religions are even more diverse than the western world(and maybe more mixed together) The western world has some pretty diverse religions, we just tend to look at the big three monotheistic faiths as the mainstream since they have pretty much taken the center stage. Having eme...

Jesus is one of the people in history that many people quote and say that he represents their viewpoint. I couldn't have said it better, and this isn't the forum for me to say that my views are endorsed by any prophet, messianic figure, or mysterious incarnation of the almighty. That reluctance may...

Here's a very interesting translation note from the New English Translation: Instead of making a whip of cords, Jesus made ?[something] like a whip of cords.? The translator is careful to note that this may have been a scribal error. But "something" like a whip of chords could be just about anything.

"literally do or die"

I once read a Gene Weingarten article in which he made an angry call to the dictionary publisher. The publisher said that they only report what is in current usage, much like the post must report a crime. Weingarten dug up a quote from the post archives in which a man says that he was "literally tor...

Looks like I didn't search the Yohanine text thoroughly enough. In any case, YC is entitled to a few mistakes living in a world of fragmentation, suffering, and confusion. The reason I tend to use the Gandhi example is that it shows us what is humanly possible - I think everyone agrees that Gandhi w...
