honestly, size doesn't matter all that much. People who read web comics are the same as those who write them, and we're all pretty geeky (comics + internet = geek) and most geeks have high speed. Now there are those that don't and they get angry when I say stuff like this, but post bigger page sizes...

the second style works for portraits, but I don't know how it would work for everything else that a comic needs. It might end up looking childish or sloppy. especialy if the comic remains in black and white. the way to avoid this is by having detailed backgrounds, so the characters seem distint. how...

you can get those results with a tablet... you'd have to play around a bit and set the pressure to change the opasity, and be drawing with a brush, or some other textured thing... so it would be down to what program you used to create your picture.
