packaging a discussion in comic form
http://www.geocities.jp/sou_nihonshi/nagare29.htm Don't know whether this is a comic or not. Either way, I thought it is interesting. Two guys are discussing a historical event. A fun way to package a discussion about something online. Especially if the graphics were cooler. (The text is Japanese, s...

in that case, i guess he is hoping to get papers to pick up the first year for free and then start paying him for future work if readers like it? (and get free advertising for his merchandice, etc.) It may be self serving, but it is a heck of a marketing method for someone who already has a year's w...

1) This is clearly a comic. Would there be any doubt? (Do you have any arguments for why it wouldn't be a comic? Love to hear them. I'm not to interested in debating these days, but I always love to hear opinions that oppose mine. Helps me redefine and/or strengthen my own feelings about things...) ...

that's good info to know. so how would you rate the overall experience? Like, are you satisfied with the quality of the art and story of the books you bought? The ordering system, etc? In other words, do you see comixpress, as they are now, a place that you and other people would enjoy buying comics...

hey, here in japan we are all ABOUT a4 sized paper. So, is this a unit used a lot in other places too? I thought it was just a Japanese thing. I really love the paper sizes here. A4, A3, B4, B3.... The comics industry here even sort of revolves around those paper sizes. You go to the store to pick u...

Dude, here is me being harsh and direct. To you, Will. I hate Will. No, just kidding. You're one of the greatest guys in the universe. Anyhow, you know, it occured to me: ARTISTS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CREATIVE. Which means 1) People with no plans to print should start working with creative layouts 2) P...

Re: How does somebody become a comic book editor?
wow. that's a really intense post. "Remove your brain, cut out your heart, and poke out your eyes." Yeah! Sign me UP!!! the main character traits you need for the job are stubborness, opinionatedness, and a belief that the artists working under you are incompetent dopes. once again, YES! I'm there a...

wow... so did anyone get together in korea for this? I live in Sapporo, Japan. If this kind of thing is going on next year, it would be cool if we could get something going on here. I could spread the news among Japanese people, but a lot of the cartoonists I know here aren't English speakers, so it...

yeah, speaking of japan, our art stores here are jam packed with all sorts of zip tone screen sheets. a real zip tone paradise. How ironic that I don't use it.... Hey, so, I think you should make the text bigger. Easier to read. Other than that, everything seemed fine to me. In general, I think the ...

I found out from someone at Viz that vol. 5 of Phoenix will be last one translated due to poor sales. Are you sure? Where did you get this info? Is there any way to check up on this? This can't be.... I haven't read the English versions, but the ones I have read in Japanese were AWESOME!! Some of t...

ok, i just heard that 20 shops in America sell 75% of the indie comics in america. Which is odd, but maybe that means that instead of 2 readers per store, you are going to get most of your readers at those 20 stores (and branch out from there if possible). So, if you can get 1,000 to 2,000 readers a...

just a side note about Japanese comics prices: most 300 page comics that sell for about 3 dollars here in japan are pretty fast reads, and the art is kind of formulaic. Like, you can tell the artist didn't spend that much time on the pictures. Which is my main reason for not liking some of the stuff...

so basically, call up the stores or whatever, find out if they'll pay you 30% of the cover price up front for 10 books or so, and then have the books printed and shipped. With the $10 set up fee, your first time comes out to a mere $20.20 for printing up a 28 page, black and white interior, color co...

david!!! $10!!!! How can you not do it?! If you want to do print, that is. If you are not interested in print as a medium, that is a different story. Ok, I just realized something really intense. According to my calculations, if you can pay the initial $10 set up fee, you can print up books and send...

yeah, that's true... but I was talking about a $3 24 page North American Continent style comic. Japanese comics are a whole different realm... Usually the kids graphic novels sell at 300 yen, which is about US $3 or so. You get 300 plus pages of all story, no ads. Most Japanese people freak when I s...

just a side note: the layout i borrowed from that artist was just half of a page. all the other pages in the entire story were layed out by me. Also, I didn't do an exact inch by inch comparrison of his panel sizes, I just used the general proportions by sight. And it turns out I suck and drawing ex...

actively studying comic art and using it in your own comics
ok, maybe I should lump this in with the "photo reference" thread I started..... I am interested in how many people out there actively study comics and apply what they see when creating their own comics. Up until recently, I have only been passively studying comics techniques. Which means, I read a ...

I think one dollar for a good comic the equivilant of 24 pages in the print world is the ideal price. If you are getting someting in color with good art and a compelling story. Then again, I am drifting further and further away from the online comics world and getting more and more into print, so I ...
