I have a new theory: Bernice, the unseen receptionist is (wait for it...) also a walrus! In fact, our mild-mannered and unnnoticed protagonist is patiently waiting for his lady-friend Bernice to get off work, so he can take her out for a romantic evening's fishing (or whatever walruses do on dates)...
