As I'm working on a study of differences between the (different) European , American, Canadian and Japanese comic industries, this really interests me a lot! I noticed how cultural differences (Japan has a very different iconographic history), recent events (Hiroshima, Nagasaki, but also the Vietnam...

Well,... there's Tintin of course! What Herg? (the artist) did in the '30s and 40s, noone understands how the guy could have been such a visionary I'll try to post a link to some artwork of his but there are tons of books about him and his characters. It seems very simple and static but it's full of...

I believe that in any comic readability is what seperates "pro" comics from amateur stuff (and by "pro" I mean pro quality, not "I make a living out of it") If a comic doesn't get its ideas across, the author should try another medium. On the other hand, I find that most mega-superhero battles forge...

Update on current projects!
A couple of months ago I first started following the posts at zwol.org, and I have learned a lot from all of you... I promised to keep you updated on my projects and the things I would learn at school (I'm in my 3rd year --of 4 !!!-- of graphic design and this year I'm starting my comic classes (I'l...

My penny's worth: try to buy one of those calligraphy sets (the cheaper ones): they offer a wide range of pens to screw onto your ink refills (black ink refills !!!!) and give you the possibility to experiment with larger or thinner lines. You can get a "lively" line without having to bother with in...

Gazo, did your Canadian friend visit the board already? I myself (starting my classes from monday on) am getting excited about getting to work with about ten other Comic artists(-to-be?)... It's really great we all seem to get on despite our cultural differences. (maybe BECAUSE of our cultural diffe...

Just popping by: European Comics, due to the size and ways of the European Market, have both ongoing storylines (though only a few, and most albums are finished stories that can easily be read in any order), and series of 2, 3, maximum 10 books. I find these short series a pleasure to read as they o...

Well, I'm a Graphic Arts student (Lay-out, Typography, Poster design, CD & book cover design,... you know what I mean), and I've finished my first two years succesfully. These first two years are called "candidatures". To be called "Master in the Graphic Arts" I have two more years to go ("Master Ye...

I live in Belgium, in Ghent (It's the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium), but as I did some of my studies in the French-speaking part of Belgium, I'm a fluent "Francophone". That's where I learnt to appreciate "adult" comix, by the way (and by adult I don't mean those with nudes 'n stuff  ) I'm b...

Maybe I'm just breaking down already-trodden doors, but, I believe the one comic to surpass every other in this type of discussion is the "MAUS" series. It's very novel-like, and proves in one go that comics can be... ...an adult entertainment too, ...gripping and emotionally mature, ...sometimes ve...

...also, most adhesive things come now in low-tack and high-tack types.
Be sure to experiment with the low-tack adhesive papers (I messed up a few drawings using high-tack on drawings )

Rip Tanion, I have t say you are generalising waaaay too much. LostToy, you should tell longer stories. The things you need to tell are deeper than a one-image gag could justify. I have to say this, though: "Arabs" and Islam are cultures and religions as wide as "western" and Christian. Did you see ...
I gree with Douglas Adams, but even if some good things are to be kept from religion (and religious ideas and morality), I prefer to reconsider EVERYTHING and build my own values from scratch. Most of them are changing every day. I find that I'm less biased than I was before, and feel this to be par...
Maybe I'm overstepping my boundaries here, but I'm just curious as to what religion most of the people on this board consider themselves. Remember, atheism is a religion too! To add to the discussion (and the confusion....heh heh) : I myself am a sceptic agnostic and a practicing atheist at the sam...
I don't "like" your catoon in the sense of it being funny, but I DO like the fact you express your opinion! (And I agree whit it: the US of A is starting to drift towards the same bigoted point they are so critical upon when discussing islamic countries : religious government. Not only 99.99% of all...

What "won people over" to CD's was the sudden and complete absence of vinyl records, players and needles in the market. concerning the CD market, you're right, at one point next to no vinyl was available anymore. In the meantime, however, most people had already switched to CD, and it was to really...
