packaging a discussion in comic form

Don't know whether this is a comic or not. Either way, I thought it is interesting. Two guys are discussing a historical event. A fun way to package a discussion about something online. Especially if the graphics were cooler.

(The text is Japanese, so it might not show up on most browsers)

Your right, the Japanese characters were not displayed properly in my browser ... not that I could read it was. I had a Japanese language class in high school and I have since forgotten almost everything.

Is it a comic? God, do we have to get into that again? But it is an interesting form. I think more media websites should have interviews and articles like that with quotes from a photo or illustration of the people involved. Well maybe not, but I would find it interesting.

seriously, though, whether it is or is not a comic is a moot point. Moot, I tell you.

The important thing is whether or not it has any interesting elements that can be used by cartoonists. I kind of think this conversation or discussion style of comics could be cool. Especially if the writing was really good.

You could, for example, draw, say, three or four different poses for each character. Then, each shot of the character on the side of the main dialogue area could rotate as you see fit during the dialogue session. Face emotions could be interchanged.

Thoughts?

I made all of them R3 comics with the same panel, that got considered a comic, so I dont see why this wouldnt.

But I think it's a brilliant way to do the next WCE roundtable, so I'll see if I can convince Joe to use it.

is THAT a comic? ha ha.

Hey, seriously, though, wouldn't that be a cool idea to do some sort of comics jam where we make our own little avatars and just put them up?

it would be like half forum half jam.

people would be all like, "hey, you got your jam in my forum! No, you got your forum in my jam!!"

Or, to make it a little less like a forum, we could all get together and draw up a bunch of avatar like things that all the participants could select, add their own text, and post.

is this totally dorky? or am I an undiscovered genius? or both?

I -love- this idea, and would very much like to see it implemented.

Incidentially, my definition of comics includes forums themselves, with or without avatars. However, it's important to note that, without a guiding desire to make the final product itself interesting, forums generally do not -use- the advantages comics offer.

provide some sense of elongated time.

(Provided, of course, no one posts while you're creating such a thing, and further provided you're allowed to put up posts so close together.)

Of course, readers of a forum which usually does not employ its advantages -as- a comic could be pretty annoyed by such use. Also, adding scripting to get ahold of more of comics' advanages
could
be
pretty
tiresome.
But I think there's definite potential in multiuser comics, especially with more robust scripting than found in *these* comics.

So... is there a programmer in the house?

There is, if enough artists agree on a precise and not too complex interface, I'll probably supply it.

wow. that's really some cool stuff up there. neat.

A little bit removed from the spartan topic of "what is a comic," I would PREFER to have some sort of illustration involved. Not saying that this is because comics necessarily have to have illustrations or anything. I just like illustrations.

The way I see it, it could go one of two ways:

1) Within the cool and simple program that someone (shadow caster?) provides, we each make our own avatar and use it. We could even set it up so that each person can have a group of various avatars to use for different posts. Kind of like a big, talky version of D&D....

2) We all come together and make a plethora of avatars, and post them in some common place, and then let people use them as they wish to make whatever stories they want, maybe using a cool and simple program that someone like shadowcaster would provide?

I think both options would be fun.

Thoughts?

I remember reading about Comic chat. Looke dinteresting, but I figured that you needed a million different characters to keep confusion at bay for when people started doubling up.
