These people are calling it the "first animation of the world", but it's really just an excellent sequence of movement.

Hrm. I guess it's all definitional...
Circa 1600 BC the Egyption Pharoh Rameses II built a temple to Isis. The temple had 110 columns on it and, on each column, was a progressively changed image of Isis. People on horseback riding by would percieve Isis moving.
The Ancient Greeks would do the pot thing, painting progressive images around a pot, and when it was spun, the figure would appear to move. Not sure about the date, but seems like the same idea as the goblet in the story.
