I feel the same way. You want to say something meaningful but have no idea what those words are. Maybe they haven't been invented yet. Out of all of the articles that I've read today on Will's passing, I believe Neil Gaiman's to be the most touching.

I think in this case, words are inadequate and you have to rely on comics.

The Creator Of The Spirit Goes Up To The Spirit In The Sky. 'Tis a sad way to start the New Year.

Eisner was a superior draftsman, but he was also one of the greatest storytellers in comics. He even wrote two books on the subject of comic storytelling, and panel layout. I own them both, and I highly recommend them to anyone who is interested in drawing, or writing comics and sequential art.

And so another great New York Jew passes from the Earth. Last week it was Jerry Orbach. This week it was Will. This New York Jew will miss them both.

I also regret never getting the chance to take Eisner's class, back when he taught at SVA. I would have loved just to have met the guy, and talk with him.

Will Eisner may be gone, but his work will live on.

The Houston Chronicle posted a nice article here.

And if you haven't noticed, http://www.WillEisner.com now has a section of the site dedicated to condolences and memories.

Will Eisner was a great man, but more than just that. He was an innovator, a genius, a teacher and an inspiration to many. While other comic creators have passed away who have created bigger superheroes that will be known for centuries, Eisner was himself a bigger hero then any he or others created.

Another great article at the St. Petersburg Times by Bob Andelman.
Andelman's biography "Will Eisner: A Spirited Life" will be published in May by Dark Horse Comics.

If there's a positive that's come out of Eisner's passing, it's that people seem to be starting to rediscover just what a genius he was. A buddy of mine got put in the "doghouse" by his wife, a week or so ago, for spending a chunk of change on those old Spirit magazines someone was selling on Ebay. (OK, for him it's a negative.)

After reading the article Eric linked to, I've come to the conclusion that, with the exception of Spiegelman (and maybe one or two others), Eisner was the only one among the many successful Jewish comic artists and writers in America to actually address the Jewish experience.
