Comic Jam: 52-pick-up (Semi-Retired)

Post by Greg Stephens »

Thought of this, had to post it. Maybe it'll work, maybe not.

Can we do a comic jam (each artist draws one panel) using a deck of cards as our basis? Starting from the King down to the Ace, rotating through the suits in the order of Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds to Spades, this would mean that the first panel should have something to do with the King of Hearts, the second one would be the Queen of Clubs and so on for 13 panels.

If the story isn't over, then 13 more panels follow, starting with the King of Clubs, Queen of Diamonds, etc.

Got a great idea for a panel but you can't make it fit within the rotation? There are two Jokers in the deck, but only two, so save 'em.

Anyone game? Draw a panel and post it here.

Update: It appears to be working just fine! For anybody new to the Jam, the easiest way to see all of the cards all together in one place is at the SubAtomic Cafe (http://www.subatomiccafe.com/main/main.html) so head over there, read the story so far, then come back here and check the last page of the thread to see how far we've progressed and what card we're calling for next!

Futher Update: I've archived as many of the cards as I could get here: http://www.zwol.org/archive.php3?type=cardjam

looks really cool to me.. but maybe the image should be a jpg instead of a gif (to get rid of that awful static)

the image itself has a lot of atmosphere... I can't wait to add something.

Excellent! Do you mind if we link to that image here in this thread? I'm probably going to make a page to display the images in a better format soon, too.

Next: Queen of Clubs, anyone?

And spread the word- there's 53 cards left. It's not against the rules to do more than one, but the more, the merrier!
Good morning! That's a nice tnetennba.

Please do! I wasn't sure how to do that. Hopefully it will be clearer. If not, I'll load a jpeg.

OK!<P>

I liked Merlin's inclusion of the previous card in the new image. It's too small to see, but there is Merlin's picture of the Queen on the newspaper with the headline "Queen takes 5th".

Well done. I was wondering if the next participant would do the 10 guys with spades thing at the cemetary!

This is kinda fun.

Maybe the jam rules should go on a card ala "The rules according to Hoyle" card that comes in some decks.

I just noticed Merlin seems to have been suggesting a rhyming scheme with the captions too.

Oh well.

I like the jam so far! I have a suggestion; should we maybe start having Greg post these on the main page? It will put something new up!

Later,

Good idea. If nobody has any objections, I'll do that. It's been a busy time, though, so give me a few days. There should be a page for the entire jam and I'll post the latest card on my own index page. Sound good?

And spread the word!

edit: Nearly forgot: Next up 9 of Hearts.

I would enjoy having my submission on Greg's page. Can participants also display the jam on their individual pages too?

Sure, why not? It's your art, after all. In fact, unless others disagree, I see no reason not to have multiple pages for this jam- As far as I'm concerned, anybody and everybody who wants to post a page that contains all images of the jam is free to do so. Anybody disagree? One suggestion: While we're image-linking to each card here in the forum, if you decide to post a jam page, please copy and upload each card to your own webhost so that we're not unfairly using each other's bandwidth.

edit: Next up the 8 of Clubs.

That sounds great.

Also, I was thinking of posting about this experiment on the CBR forums, but it occured to me that if you had wanted to post about it over there, you already would have...

If you don't mind, I will put a post up there about it... but I will wait to see what you think first.

Is there a sign up for a card or just post it and hope someone else doesn't beat you to it?

Just post- Currently, all the information about the Jam is in this thread. If you've read all these posts, you know everything.

In the event that two people do the same card, um, we'll decide what to do then.

I was thinking about that. Maybe we could branch out into seperate story universes, or have paralell stories, or a story with several paths or something. Anyhow, I think that even if two people do the same card, there should be some creative way we could include them both that might actually make for a more interesting experiment...

But then who am I to suggest such heady ideas?

Anyhow, I look forward to seeing the next installment!

I just found your site a couple of days ago and I'm new to posting. At any rate, this challenge interested me so here's my contribution. Two more with a bit of verse for good measure are on the way.
