The ability to read this comic backwards could be related to the fact that it is not always the easiest to tell cause from effect early on in a comic. On a different note, the giant monkey head makes me think of Mojo Jojo from Power Puff Girls. |

I'm certainly glad that someone pointed out some biological trivia. It makes me feel more at home here. Does anyone know which mammal has the lowest average body temperature? |

This seems to be really off topic, but, as you were nice enough to say my message made you feel more at home...
I would have thought a sloth was the answer. Googling around the internet a little, it seems that both the two-toed sloth and the echidna are vying for the honor of having the lowest average body temperature for a mammal.
Now I feeling just like Interesting Jeff! |

The mammal with the lowest body temperature is me...
...'cuz I'm just so cool.
You know every time I look at this comic now I think of:
"Won'chu take me to.... Mon-key Towwwn" etc.
Wouldn't it be kind of funny if there was a Funky Town midi playing in the background when you open it up? I don't know. Maybe that's a retarded idea. |

Comin' in at number 2, that was "Monkey Town", by Chimp, holding in the Top 10, now, for six weeks in a row.

Hey, Kasey, I got Don on the phone, but I can't find those pictures you were supposed to see last week. _________________ "Park the beers, and grab the smiles. It's flight time." - LtCdr. J. Robert "Bobby" Stone, USN (R.I.P.) |

I see that I'm not the only one who listens to Bob and Tom. To the best of my interesting Jeff-like knowledge, the coldest body temp mammal is the echidna, and that funky town parody is as pondrous as my trivia. |

I think my favorite ecxlaimation from now on will be "Great Scott!" because Scott McCloud's musical tastes are amazingly similar to those of my greatest idol; me.

I'm not sure what Negativland is, but Bob and Tom is a National comedy variety show on radio. They have a character called Mr. Obvious who solves other peoples' pondrously stupid problems. I thought that someone was quoting him since He used "These calls are pondrous man" in his too hot for radio sketch. |

Gotcha. No, the poster logging on as Kasey Kasim was referring to a negativland "song" called "The Letter U and the Numeral 2" sampling Kasey Kasim's own off-mike rants about U2, long-distance dedications, etc... Very funny, relentlessly vulgar and unforgettable. Also led to a big fat lawsuit. The quote "Ponderous man, f___ing ponderous" is straight off that record. (Of course the quote itself is a sample of someone other than Kasim, so maybe it was Mr. Obvious afterall!) |

Hey. Long time reader, first time poster.
I love Monkeytown so far. A bit pedestrian, but funny. Also, I can tell from the past MIs that the most pedestrian of Scott's work usually ends up being the most twisted in the end (Uninformed Bob, anybody?).
Can't wait to see how Monkeytown turns out. |

Are Bob and Tom another pair of Howard Stern clones?
Actually, for years now, Stern and a million other D.J.s have been playing this now infamous tape of outakes of Kasey Kasim from his old syndicated America's Top 40 radio show.
There are three segments that I know of:
1. Kasey has a tirade in the middle of doing a "Long Distance Deadication" to a dead dog.
2. Kasey records a promo for an affilitate station, and goes nuts when he gets to the line in the copy about his show being a aired at 2AM.
3. Kasey stumbling through an intro to a U2 record.
In each case, Kasey goes from his "smiley" voice, to a bitter, angry, old crank, who as Scott previously mentioned, curses like a sailor.
I think I heard the bit of that record the Scott refers to, Negitiveland, once when I was flipping through the left side of the radio dial. Wacky stuff.
Is Kasey gonna make a cameo in the new Scooby-Doo flick? _________________ "Park the beers, and grab the smiles. It's flight time." - LtCdr. J. Robert "Bobby" Stone, USN (R.I.P.) |

No, Bob and Tom are not Howard Stern clones. They do a variety show which is a lot like Saturday Night Live for the radio. They have great comedy acts and skits. They can be raunchy, but they tend not to make people as sick as Stern does. Recent Guests have included Dick Clark, Jim Breur, and (Dan Costanelenza) I didn't spell it right, but it's the voice of Homer Simpson. look for them at www.bobandtom.com
Back to the main subject, I definately like the Fantastic Four-like qualities of the Monkey Team. |

Heh, heh... science attack... that still cracks me up.
By the by, did anyone else realize that Scott must not have read many Discworld novels (since I hardly believe he would resist the juicy reference just waiting for us all)? You know, the ambivalence toward calling apes monkeys.

Certainly did - have been a discworld fan for some years, and recently caught on to the brilliant Mr McCloud thanks to one of the tutors on my Masters course - and have been hooked since. I didn't think Pratchett's Discworld had caught on too well over in the US - over here in Blighty they're pretty popular. Everyone should try them...
As this is my first attempt at posting here (just signed up), I don't know if it'll work, but keep up the great work Scott - curious to see how this one turns out... |

Yes, there's a great difference in Terry Pratchett's level of popularity between the UK and the USA. In the UK, it's not uncommon for many feet of shelf-space in a bookstore to be given over to his books and for a new book to be heralded by giant posters in the underground, while in the USA he's generally only given about as much shelf-space as 5 or 6 books can use and not many people know his name. _________________ Good morning! What really impresses me about Terry Pratchett is his ability to make a story very funny, while at the same time taking the story itself completely seriously. The story ends up easily sophisticated enough that you can totally forget that it's also funny, and still thoroughly enjoy it.
Good Omens, the book he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman, is being adapted into a movie -- directed by Terry Gilliam. Should be a trip. _________________ TwentySevenLetters.com

AT LAST!
Discworld readers!!
And more importantly they're on the internet miles & miiiles & miiiiiiles away! Had impossible troubles to find them in english (in Belgium) a few years ago, and when the local library started buying them i noticed there were at least hundred fans for each discworld novel available.
What is great though is that you can easily slip into this "disc-speech" no-one but a die-hard fan would understand, talking about "ooook", and mentioning that a Wizzard's Staff has a Knob on the End, and thefact that the song involves a Hedgehog....
(Yes I know: I mis-spelled "wizard"--but that's the point; No pointy hat without a point, of course )
By the way, the first discworld illustrator (Jack Kirby, I believe), passed away recently... I'll miss him _________________ Check out my new site (under construction) at: InkAddict |

Although Gunboy can informally be considered a monkey, technically, he is a human. Just look at him! |

I know this may be off the point but...(this is the point where you tune out my pointless yammering), I was flipping through stations on the radio, when I came across a song which I can't get out of my head, I don't know the name but it went something like this;"Brass monkey..beat beat...funky monkey...beat beat...funky,chunky monkey....beat beat...brass mokey", or something like that(yes, I know it's really not a song about monkeys),I hate the song but I can't get it out of my head(for the past week) ,if any body can help get it out I will be very gratefull(sorry about the run on). |
