looking for affordable artists. $10-$40 a page price range

Post by dschwartz »

Pencil and ink, black and white, sci-fi themed.

Any art style is good enough for me. Post a sample of your work. Pinups are nice, but I' m looking for sequential artists.

I'm saving up some funds and hope to start work on my comic in the near future.

A mistake I made

Post by Ruyei »

Here's something to think about. For one thing, pages take hours to make, and even five dollars for an hour is rather low not to mention for five. So if I had to give you an estimate you'll find artists looking for a $20-$30 range payment. Here's the problem with that price range, the standard for this site is $50. Now this may not apply to everyone, but the $20-$30 range tends to attract foreigners for whom the dollar is very high compared to their currency. Now I've worked with many many foreigners but it does have its own host of problems. For one thing, their English may not be very good, causing numerous communications difficulties. Also, simply being from another country has downsides as well, such as time-zones for live chat if they are around the world, or simply cultural influence (I made a comic for example about Amelia Earhart and my Argentine artist had no idea who she was). I'm not saying that all foreigners are like this or that you shouldn't hire foreigners, but it does as I've stated open the door for a more difficult relationship in some cases. Thus I recommend changing your range to 20$-50$ and to be willing to pay 50$. Also, for your chosen partner do a short three page comic with them to test your chemistry. There's nothing worse than getting three pages that look terrible to you when you've already paid for eight.

Best of luck,
Ruyei

Not always a mistake

Post by Sleight »

Those are all very good points Ruyei, and I agree a higher page rate would almost always result in a better quality of work and a smoother relationship between the writer and the artist, but I want to say a few words just in case OP can't afford a higher rate. We don't want him to get discouraged to make his comic just because of that, do we?

First of all, $30 per page is way better than those who offer back-end pay, and there are quite a number of amateur artists who take those back-end pay jobs even if it doesn't make money. Usually because they're still building up their portfolio. Some of those guys' work are not even bad. For guys like me still trying to break in, getting paid some is better than not getting paid at all.

About getting foreigners, yes, I agree that could be a hassle sometimes. However, if you're lucky, there's a slim chance you could snag a foreign artist who don't have any of those issues you mentioned. For example, I am from the Philippines, but I think my English is decent and I believe I have a good understanding of Western culture and stuff. Hurray Internet!

All in all, I agree with your recommendation for him to offer a better rate, but if he can't, well, I say he should still take a chance.

Ruiey is absolutly right. I am a comic book artist from Portugal and I don't work for less than 50$/page. One reason is because 50$ are not 50€ but 44,138€. It can be negotiable and sometimes can be done for 40$. And he's right about the three pages you should ask to your artist. So, here's the link to my deviant page http://martinabe.deviantart.com/gallery/
My e-mail address is martinho_abreu@hotmail.com
If my artwork interests you email me, send some script for three pages (not paid, of course).
Thank you for your time.

The only bad time i had with a colorist from another country waz i gave the guy 2 weeks to do a cover. On the day of i messaged him and he "forgot" to do it and said he would get it to me within 12hrs. 60hrs later i got the work. It was half shit and dude expected to get paid right away. Getting $30 a page from anybody on this site is way more money than most will ever offer here. The downside depends on how long it takes to draw the page and if the guy paying wants changes.

Funding is the issue with me. $30 is the high end for me. If my gofundme pans out, I'll be able to offer a bit more.

I just want to be clear that this comic of mine isn't happening anytime soon. I'm writing this on a ps3. I need to pay off some dept's first and buy a new computer.

Also, i'm going the self publishing route, as this is my first comic ever.
I don't expect to make any money back from this endevour.

Being a Canadian working in retail, and a former telemarketer, I understand that language barriers can cause problems. I do keep an on where artist applicants are from and decent English is good enough for me.

you may want to have waited till you're ready to work, people lose interest fairly quickly.

Samples...

I'm British, I do inking and lettering, and I work very quickly, but $30 a page is basically a favour! But if you like my work and you have a cool script then we can maybe work something out.

Working a dead end job is soul destroying and we all want to leave something behind.
