Set during the 70´s-80´s, in an alternate timeline where project orion didn´t get shutdown (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_O ... ropulsion) ) and moves forward to eventually send people into space.
Anyway, a scientist mad enough to accept the mission but sane enough to be reliable gets sent to space never to see another human again. Due to how expensive it is to actually get anything into space and how liberal the US government was with drug use on government programs (see MK Ultra), the only ´entertainment´ on board of the ship would be LSD and 1-2 books.
The protagonist would then slowly but surely slip into madness and depression fueled by drugs and isolation by then end of the story with the uncaring vastness of space as backdrop.
This first part would be relatively straight forward in terms of plot, taking inspiration from the likes of Moon (2009), Cast Away and other stories of isolation. This setting also gives it room to explore some pretty deep philosophical themes through the eyes of the first exile of the Solar System. The heavy use of psychedelics by the protagonist also gives us the opportunity to experiment with style, narrative and so on.
After this part is where the story gets crazy but those will be details for later.
