Well, it is a tool originnaly designed to generate hopefully cool looking images based on math equations, with the thought that continuous equations will usually generate continuous tone images that are likely co compress very well either directly in png or reencoded a jpg.
Exemples coming to mind :
color gradients , usefull when stretched in tables for example, or as a background of a comic pannel.
Easy way to generate smooth alpha gradients. Usefull to generate a stretchable general purpuse translucent baloon for effect like ine nowhere girl.
Fun, tweaking equations is my geeky way to find inspiration, like some artists do when they start a drawing by a bunch of random lines.
