I'm thinking about making money out of my comics. My idea was this: I keep my web page with my comics, but I also will have other comics, of adult nature (explicit) hosted in another site, where people have to pay to see them.

My readers can keep reading my "regular" comics for free, but those interested in the "adult adventures" need to pay. I will have a link, and some samples in my page, so readers will know what to expect in the adult page.

I would like to know people's opinions about this project, and also I would like to know if there is any site that hosts this kind of comics, and have the required software to handle the payments.

If you want to do payments the cheap way, you can have people use credit cards or checking accounts or whatever through PayPal (or by snail-mailing you money), then encode them a new username and password using .htaccess.

Assuming your server is running Apache or one of the Apache knockoffs, that is.

Warped is an excellent host that just happens to have a policy of not censoring anything. However, you have to be able to upload everything yourself without handholding, as that's how they keep it so inexpensive. In contrast, most full-service web hosts have terms of service that give them complete freedom to shut you down and keep your money at the whim of anyone who objects strongly enough to your use of a swearword.

If you want to make money off of the comics then make family oriented comics. Historically it is proven movies, music or any other property makes vastly more money if it is "G" rated in contrast to any "R" or "XXX" rated material. Porn is never the solution it only causes more problems and pain.

Yeesh, what's the weather like in your world, Thomas? I realize that you hate pornography for whatever fundie reasons you have, but that doesn't change the reality that it is in fact a thriving industry bringing in barrels of money.

Pornography tends to pioneer the financial angle of each new medium because of the demand; for example, it's practically the only web content that people have been willing to pay real money for at the moment. If there's a true working micropayments solution to found, porn will likely find it first, and then other businesses will follow suit.

True that the porn industry is a money making machine, but the family enrtainment industry makes the porn industry pale in comparison. The simple fact is because with fmaily intertainment you have a huge market audience since everyone can partake whereas the porn or adult entertainment industry must rely on adults only, and mostly male adults at that. So not only have you lost almost half of the audience by excluding women you lose a huge audience by alienating children and decent people. If the porn industry does find a model of payment acceptable across the internet, which i doubt, I still hold to my belief that porn will never bring about anything but pain and problems for any medium you use it for.

The Pig...head over to http://www.sequentialtart.com, they had a discussion and some articles about erotic comics, and an erotic comic anthology in the making. See this http://www.sequentialtart.com/community/Forum2/HTML/002195.shtml thread and more. There was also a guy over there that had started an adult comics site, just can't find the link right now.

I understand what you mean, Thomas. But "family entertainment" is already a humongous industry, so they can do "family movies" and sell them to the entire world using a multi-million advertising campaign.

Now, what are the possibilities of an unknown artist to plug his amateur creation inside that market?

Anyway, who reads "family oriented comics"? The traditional comics (superheroes and kid stuff) is been going down the drain since the nineties. Even giants like Marvel are ruined.

Adult material, on the other hand, will always have a market. May be is not as BIG a market, but is a market where you don't have to be the owner of Walt Disney or Pixar to have a chance.

I was checking how other adults cartoons sell online. People even pay for not very good doodles at online auctions.

There is also the matter of artist's pride. I know this is silly, but I rather starve to death than spend the rest of my days drawing dull sugarcoated "Barney the purple Dinosaur" style stuff...

And I don't see how some erotic drawings can cause "problems and pain"... It's just cartoon characters having fun!
