Here's hoping for some true crosswording. It would be interesting to see how well Scott can integrate different stories without preplanning (assuming that he hasn't planned all of this).

I tried that for a while, but the only answer I could ever come up with is "Get stuck in a bathtub."

Not terribly useful.

One could just as easily say that they came to the conclusion that there is no god due to strenuous scientific method. Respectfully, no. One could not say so. The scientific method is an emprical system, reliant on a methodology that requires repeatable experimentation to support or not support a g...

Hmm. I thought I was making a little joke. Yeah, I could tell. But unfortunately both Wiccanism and this particular argument regarding atheism are hot buttons of mine and I couldn't resist the urge to make a serious reply. Apologies...I know I hate it when people take my jokes (or anything I say, r...

This question hinges on the definition of a lot of words that are very difficult to define. And a few that are not so difficult. So, here's a little help from the Oxford English Dictionary and the Encyclopaedia Brittanica. Part of the question regards the word "Antithesis." This word has a number of...

The Antithesis of Organized Religion

An NPR piece today referred to the loose confederation of beliefs followers call "Wicca" as "the antithesis of organized religion." Odd. Last I checked, the antithesis of organized religion was called atheism. As a person with a relationship with Neopaganism (Wicca is a term that refers both to a s...

One caveat: I have heard tell that the US dubbed version that will come to theaters is severely chopped down from the original, so if you can find another way to get ahold of it, that would be way better. But I don't know personally, so that may just be BS.

Manga influence

There's such an explosion of talent right now which can be traced to a small army of kids reading manga about 5-8 years ago. Has anyone considered the sheer size of the talent pool that'll emerge just a few years from now when today's young manga readers?a group roughly TEN TIMES the size of their ...

I'm having some weird problems with my last post and editing doesn't seem to be helping. The last sentence should read: "The large color works that we see from CRFH, American Elf, Sluggy, and Wigu are bound to be the exception rather than the norm." and they should have all been links, but trying th...

The big limitation in daily webcomics is not space, it's time. It takes a lot of time and effort to put together a comic every day, and more expansive works are beyond most cartoonists. After all, most webcomickers are amateurs with jobs and/or school to deal with, and regular updates are the fastes...

While MonkeyTown is really Super-Monkey-Great, I would be hesitant to claim that anyone is ripping it off. After all, that sort of goofy anime-esque monkey humor is pretty prevelant in our culture, as is goofy anime-esque team battle humor. Think of Mojo Jojo on the Powerpuff Girls. I think this is ...

I would tend to agree with William's take on experimentation, although I'd like to mention that the idea of "experimentation" in comics is a little different than in other media simply because comics as we know them are so very new. With other media, there is usually some actual tradition that exper...

All Eisner had was his signature. Which is pretty iconic in itself, albiet not very easy to reuse in a webcomic. I know that I can recognize an Eisner work across the comic store from the signature alone. Sort of like how we wouldn't recognise Peter Parker, but we'll always know who the guy in the ...

McCloud=Wavy Stink Lines

Going back to the original question, I think that this is merely a good illustration of an effect described in UC. On page 128, he uses wavy lines representing smell on an upturned garbage can, saying that the lines are "Not really a picture anymore, these lines are more a visual metaphor-- a symbol...
