Friday's comic was cute and funny -- the best No Contest I've seen in a while, in fact. Tell Mrs. Robinson ("and here's to you, Mrs. Robinson...") to tell her daughter to get a web page and share more. That's good stuff.

All right, the flow seems to have died down, so I'll make some comments now. First of all, thanks for actually taking me at face value and giving it to me straight-up. I appreciate the positive comments in the mix, but the negative ones have given me plenty to think about, and helped me focus on a s...

I hope one day you'll go pro, cause the comics industry NEEDS guys who keep trying to evolve. Thanks. That's the goal, although I'm open to a variety of "pro" possibilities -- even if art doesn't work out (I've taken plenty of art classes, but slowing down and applying what I've learned prac...

In #17, you use 7 panels, but you force them into that same four panel space. I just can't understand why so many web cartoonists force their work into the tiny space and proportions that newspaper editors determined decades ago, when the could be using all of the space they need. I'll answer that ...

You've got talent for writing stories, not for writing comic strip 4-panel shots. As part of my commitment to taking criticism well, I'm not going to make excuses for most of the criticisms, but this one cried out for an answer -- simply put, I know that I'm no good for writing shorts, which is why...

Yes, there was more of it, and it was hosted somewhere else.

That was great. Good material. Plenty to work with.

C'mon, who's next? Keep it coming!

Slam Desiderata: Making a Stand for Criticism

I want you to hit me as hard as you can. No, seriously. Go to http://desiderata.keenspace.com , read a sampling of the strips available, then come back here and rip the living shit out of me for every little thing that's wrong with them. This may sound like something for the "Hype" forum, but I'm pu...

Max is THINKING IN COMICS again!

I'm having a heck of a week, going through massive withdrawal and sluggishness as I break free of caffeine's evil hold. Meanwhile, though, Tuesday's comic did eventually show up, and I have posted a new edition of my column, THINKING IN COMICS. This time, I take look at CrossGen's new anthology form...

Question: What does a zig-zag look like viewed from one of the ends?

Answer: DISMEMBER by DMG.

That was fun. Not the astoundingly original interface that the ninja with no arms originally appeared in, but still a fascinating new way to tell a strange, hyper-violent comics story. Very cool.

I think research (or, at least, drawing on known info from past research) would probably be allowed -- remember, while the narrative was fictional, lots of (I'm assuming) factual information and educational content made it into "Flap Those Flagella Like You Mean It!"

Desiderata Expands: New Column + More Comics!

Desiderata is stepping up the pace; you can now click onto http://desiderata.keenspace.com and find new comics THREE times a week -- Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. For those unfamiliar with the comic, Desiderata begins as a slice-of-life, but will rapidly take a turn for the strange; romance, humor,...

I'm just kind of wondering if the mass of hair that's grown since last we saw Sel is a commentary on how long you've been on hiatus.

In any event, it's good to see new stuff up.

Obviously, it would need to be quickly and easily key-word searchable for specific objects, and mixing and matching the various elements, options and styles for each types of object would have to be fluid and intuitive -- I'm thinking that finding the perfect lamppost from the archive would take a f...

Re: Build your own comic.

An interesting toy. That was . . . silly. I've often wondered if there would be a market for a ready-made comic-making program; y'know, several CDs containing hundreds of basic characters archetypes in hundreds of poses, with features to customize them with clothing, accessories, deformities, etc.,...

That was just plain silly. I Liked It. It's rare to see something called a "comic" that's done in Flash be an actual comic, and also rare to have an actual comic in Flash that actually benefits from it. This is most definitely 100% comics, and it definitely gains much from the format, so this is alr...

THREAD BUMP!

I would just like to point out for anybody who's passingly familiar with Desiderata 's original iteration, the new version really begins to diverge in today's strip , as we get the first glimpse of how the storytelling will differ this second time around. (and 6 months later, we still don't find out...

Still, I can't resist pointing out that there's a very fine line (sometimes none at all!) between "purist" and "fuddy-duddy." Sometimes love of a thing is more strongly tied to what first attracted you to that thing than the thing itself. Very true. Another parallel within the comic field might be ...

Re: Character names

What methods do you all use for coming up with character names? As Greg mentioned, baby name books are great. Browsing on the web using Google and carefully-chosen key words usually works when I need a particular ethnicity or historical period. Mostly, though, I just make them up on the fly (no few...

Honestly- and Warren Ellis should be smart enough to admit this- The only reason that comics haven't had even limited animation before now is because it's darn hard to do using only paper and ink. Ellis is more of a purist than I am, but, to be fair, what he specifically said was, "Because, as far ...

Very nice. Jack always surprises me. Always. I especially like the "trails" (that's what I tend to see them as in the context of an online comic, even though that doesn't seem to be what Jack is using them for) above the strip itself. The fact that they're dropping from above into the panels in whic...

I would argue that it is comics, comics using subject-to-subject transitions while substituting animation for moment-to-moment or action-to-action transitions. It still uses juxtaposition for something , and that's good enough for me. But that's not why I posted. I was re-reading "Robots Love to Dan...
