It's time for another THROW DOWN!

Boys and girls, the <a href="http://www.spxpo.com/anthology.htm">gloves are off again</a>.

(Last year, I <a href="http://www.zwol.org/old/ezboard/fzwolfr ... tml">threw down</a> with <a href="http://www.clango.org/">R Stevens</a> and a bunch of the folks on this board. R didn't participate, and none of us got in "The Book," but <a href="http://www.potlatchcomics.org/">some good did come</a> of it all.)

This year has a theme: biographies. Family and friends don't really count, according to the rules, so here were a few suggestions off the top of my head for some of the forum frequenters that I could remember:

Greg: David Bowie (Come on!) or Paul Auster.
RS3: Steve Wozniak or Shigeru Miyamoto.
Jawwa: Jerry Seinfeld. (Too easy for him.) Perhaps Sean Connery.
Vince: Salvador Dali or <a href="http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/bl ... tml">Peter Blume</a>.
Glych: Alfred Hitchcock. (Hedy Lamarr?)
Randy Oest: Gary Gygax or James Thurber.
Tim Mallos: Scott Adams or the <a href="http://www.cyan.com/">Miller Bros</a>.
Tailsteak: Hironobu Sakaguchi or Sophocles.
Jack Masters: M.C. Escher or <a href="http://stephenwolfram.com/">Stephen Wolfram</a>.
Cat: Lewis Carroll. Diego Garcia. (If only because I'd like to see how you handle Frida Kahlo...)
JC!: <a href="http://verbosity.wiw.org/neogenesis/fea ... html">John Romero</a>. Darin Morgan.
Lyle: Linus Torvalds or Rube Goldberg.
Max Liebman: Tom Stoppard or Brian Michael Bendis.

Of course, I don't even KNOW you guys, but I think it would be interesting to see biographies of these people in your particular art styles. Disagree? Draw something different. Got a suggestion for me? I'm leaning towards Amedeo Modigliani. Or Karl Schwarzschild. But anything's fair game, right?

This year I'm gonna throw down!! Good suggestions but I think that I may go with someone else. Seeing as how my name is Randy Oest, I may just do the bio for Randy West, the porn star! (How do you draw porn music?)

A "throwdown" is just my word for a challenge, just like a medieval knight dropping the gauntlet to challenge another. The venue: the year's <a href="http://www.spxpo.com/">Small Press Expo</a> Anthology, linked above. Last year, I posted a similar thread challenging others a few weeks before the deadline, and a few folks responded, though none of us, to my knowledge, made the final cut for the book.

Count yourself in and draw something. Anyone's welcome, but I can't guarantee any of us will make the editorial cut...

yeah, but you will at least have an interesting comic to either post on your own site or include in a printed project. The structure is nice, because it might make you do something that you wouldn't have done otherwise.

The term "throw down" can also refer to an old fashioned fight.

you meant Diego Rivera, the muralist from mexico, right? i'll prolly be doing one on Jose Guadalupe Posada, though. he's one of my most favorite artists from mexico. that is, if i can find the time to sit down and do it....

Oops. Yes, of course I meant Diego Rivera, Mexican muralist whose paintings adorn my walls, rather than Diego <i>Garcia</i>, an island off the coast of the tip of India. I shouldn't type when tired! I saw an exhibit of Kahlo, Rivera, Orozco, Siqueiros, and others at the <a href="http://www.phxart.org/">Phoenix Art Museum</a> last summer and was amazed. I had seen Posada's art somewhere before (probably Day of the Dead woodcuts) but never realized who it was. That would doubtlessly be a fascinating biography, especially in your hands, Cat!

Yep, Vince, guess a throw-down's also a straight-up fight... but you can walk away from this one without a bloody nose, right?

that sounds llike a really awesome show. and i bet there were a lot of pieces featured i prolly haven't even seen before!

posada is really awesome. he's responsible for a lot of the imagery associated with day of the dead. i can't wait to FINALLY work on it (i've made several feable attempts already, but i have a lot of source material and stuff to use...)

I have decided to work on my own print comic project, which is now taking all of my time. I decided not to take part in this thing after all. I am looking forward to checking it out when it comes out, though.

Anyone going to do it?
