Might want to add a 'not work safe' to that... Some people have hypersensitive workplaces

I tried to edit my first post, but it keeps asking me to specify a thread title, without providing a way to do it; treats the edit like it's a new post. This is what the first post looks like, after editing:

They made me take a class... I have to try and avoid looking at anything involving naked or half naked anything at all while I'm at work. The company lost a client due to some engineer with a snap-on tools calendar last year...

Hm. I'm not sure why that's happening to you- I thought I'd fixed that bug. At any rate, I edited your post so that it reads as you wanted it to.Brad Simpson wrote:I tried to edit my first post, but it keeps asking me to specify a thread title, without providing a way to do it; treats the edit like it's a new post.

When I get around to it, this image, and the last few days images as well, will be done as fully rendered pieces, some in color, some b/w.

While I have to admit that the Frank Frazetta type art never was my cup of tea, I can appresiate the talent and work that went into these peices. Some of them are quite beautiful, although others line work seems to be a bit sloppy. I have to say good job overall ... slow down and take your time. If you are using your web site as a portfollio, use the same rules you would us in a paper one. Present your best completed work first and leave out the ones that don't show your capibilities the best. Personaly for advice, many people have sketch books of naked women, I would focus more time on story-telling. The early pages of Johny Blister looked like it could be a good start. Expand on it and see where it takes you. The actual Sweety comic pages were not too great in terms of storytelling. Fight scenes are easy to do and offen over done. To start your comic you should tell who are your characters, where are they from, and touch a bit on the premise of the series. Good to see you out there and keep up the good work.
PS: Shouldn't this be in the Hype section?

Hi David. Thanks for the compliments, and for taking the time to write such a detailed response.
The Daily Sweetie feature isn't intended as a portfolio; it's a regularly recurring feature which gives the site some extra dynamism. Some of the pieces from the series may end up in my portfolio eventually, assuming that they get printed.
I can't imagine why I put this thread here instead of in the hype section.

I love the individual illustrations. What did you use to draw them, and how did you scan them?
Comics:
It seems that your ink lines are not as good as your pencil work, which is a shame because your pencil work is really good. The inks for Johnny Blister are pretty good, though.
I think that if you took more time on the sequential (comic book) images, you could do a fantastic comic. Also, the size of the comic wasn't very readable. The small one was too small and the big one was too big. Maybe a happy medium?
Look forward to seeing more stuff!

"ha ha" is nice.
What do you do to it after you scan the image? Do you adjust or edit the image in any way? Do you scan it at a higher dpi and then reduce the dpi for web display?
Just curious....

Vince,
I scan the original, which is usually 11 x 17 in., at 300spi @ 100%, into Photoshop. I convert to grayscale, and, depending on the image, sharpen, replace color, play with the contrast/ lighten, levels, or whatever it might need, and then convert to lineart mode, using diffussion dither. Then I convert it back to grayscale (which results in no actual change to the image), and, using the magic wand, remove the white part of the image. From this state I reduce the image to web dimensions, in the 500 x 600 pixel (range), convert to RGB, open in Image Ready, and save as a gif, usually with less than 12 colors, and sometimes as few as 5. I never consider resolution when preparing images for the web. Ppi has no meaning on screen; only pixel dimensions do. That's how I've done it for the last few images anyway.

Brad! You're in Montreal! I was there all last weekend, I'm in Sherbrooke. Maybe you would be another candidate for the big 24 hour comic event we want to hold next Summer to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defence Fund. What do you say?
While I'm at it, do you ever go to the monthly jams at the Casa de Popolo. I've never been myself, but I know Salgood Sam somewhat, and he raves about them.
Sweetie is great, by the way. Your renderings are pretty amazing.

I've been to the Jam a few times. Everyone's always welcome of course. As for the 24 hour comic; anything's possible. I'm glad you like my work. Thanks.
