Many of you have probably already read about this: Steven Grant noted in his "Permanent Damage" column over at CBR that Time has announced what it sees as the top ten comics of 2001. You can read his column at http://www.comicbookresources.com/colum ... ticle=1189 and see the list itself at http://www.time.com/time/bestworst2001/comics.html

I figured this would be a good place to discuss this, since moving into mainstream culture is a big part of the "reinventing" of comics.

This list obviously shows what Time sees as a "good" comic. It does not surprise me that the only superhero comic on the list is more as a nostalgia trip with Art Spiegelman's name attached, but frankly, I can't think of any superhero comics in 2001 that ought to have made the list anyway.

What does kind of surprise me is that I have not heard of a few of these comics -- specifically, "The Golem's Mighty Swing," "Hey, Wait," and "All the Wrong Places." I feel kind of sheepish. Should I have heard of these? Or rather, what I guess I mean is, did these titles really fly under the radar? Did most stores not carry them? Or did they just not happen to get much press?

Of the ones that you mention not recognizing, I will say that Hey Wait was definitely one of the better comics I read in the past year. Just amazing. Very simple but potent approach. Unfortunately I read a friend's copy and then gave the copy I bought to another friend as a birthday present, so I can't comment specifically, but it is a really interesting comic!

And it is by yet another Jason.

Yes, I just bought "Hey, Wait..." and some other comics on the list last night, and read it this morning. It's good. Jasons of the world unite.

Let the nit-picking begin: TIME says (re: Heavy Liquid): " For those who yearn for comix' very own version of "Blade Runner" or "The Matrix," your prayer has been answered."

Seemed to me like 2/3 of the Matrix was stolen out of The Invisibles ...
