Illustrating someone else's journal.

I had some down time last month so I started practicing some skill that I felt lacking in. I didn't want to start another story that I wouldn't finish, so went looking through some online journals and blogs of people I know. Blu Sander is a talented musician from Texas that I've known for a little while now. It was at his site that I found my inspiration, an archived journal page. After I did I couple of panels I emailed Blu to tell him what I was doing, and he told me that he loved it and was excited to see it finished. I started this project as an exercise for my digital coloring skills. And I don't think it turned out too bad. Now that I look at the whole thing I wish I would of gone ahead and did some backgrounds. But maybe it gives the comic a stage-like feel to it. I don't know. You be the judge.

Hey Eric,

Good comic. I really like the coloring and the lettering you choose. The journal entry just has the feel of a web comic, so the adaption is just right. However no matter how much I look at it, Blu looks almost exactly like Eric Wilmoth (the one with the H2O).

One thing about illustrating somebody else's journal is you do not have all the personal bullshit. I always found it hard to illustrate a journal comic because the subject matter was too close to home. Simular with this FlatEarth which was fictional, but based on my life. Furthermore, illustrating somebody else's journal you do not have a time restrants. I always felt pressured to get a journal entry done and quick. However I am just a slow artist and it take longer than a day for me to finish a comic strip. Life moves faster than my comics and then I feel like I am falling behind.

Anyways, a good comic.

Blu looks almost exactly like Eric Wilmoth (the one with the H2O).

Yeah, a little. I think it's the hair, but Blu now wears in in a faux hawk. And he no longer has the blue corduroy jacket, that was the center of most of the panels.

I just finished up another journal comic. This time I took the text from the one and only William George. I started this comic with boring rectangle panels and then I remembered reading in one of Will Eisner's books about how open panels equal open space, so that is what I did. It both rocks and it rolls

Eric gave me a sneak peak at this comic before completed, so I have been waiting for a while to comment about it here and especially to see what was William's reaction to the "adaptation". What got me was the whole separate storylines that related, but not really. I always thought William's head was in the clouds, but not literally. So William, how do you feel about being a spaceman?

I love the art and storytelling. I love the two tone color and the openness, however I would putt some blank space before the art to balance more (there being a lot of black space below the comic and the sky is above in the story).

This is also rather different compared to "Mean People Suck". It shows a flexibility in story telling and genres. I am curious what your next journal comic will look like (wink).
