I'm not sure where I should've put this, but I put it here because both articles briefly mention Scott. But, obviously if it's in the wrong place feel free to move it.
This column appeared yesterday in my university's newspaper:
Comic books finally get respect
http://www.bgnews.com/vnews/display.v/A ... 5f2f87b1be
and I submitted a response to it that got printed today:
Not all great comics were movies
http://www.bgnews.com/vnews/display.v/A ... 73380d8180
I don't really like the title that the editor came up with, but on the bright side the column was printed and without changing my wording too much.

In a vaguely related vein, here's a piece by the CBC's popular culture columnist: Comics have become too respectable.
I don't agree with Brown by a long stretch here, but it's an interesting perspective on things.

Actually it's vey related, it wouldn't take much for my essay to be tuned into a response to Brown's essay rather than the one I was responding to. Brown also seems to erroneously lump superhero movies together with comics.Doc MacDougal wrote:In a vaguely related vein, here's a piece by the CBC's popular culture columnist: Comics have become too respectable.

I think Brown is addressing comics being mainstreamed as pop culture, as opposed to existing as a fringe subculture. I would suggest that the mining of comics as source material for films is probably a half-way decent indicator of that. But only one of several such indicators (coverage in the highly conservative National Post, which also at one point ran a series of journal entries by Seth, and critical attention in the academy being two other indicators he discussed).
Perhaps it would be interesting to discuss what other such indicators might exist for gauging the acceptance/respectability of comics in mainstream mass/pop culture? And what other forms or fields of acceptance/respectability might be out there?
Ben.
