Looking for a good artist

Post by jronnquist »

Okay, here goes nothing.

I should warn you, I’m a little bit annoyed at the moment. The good news is that I’ve been told this tends to make me more amusing.

I’m going to put two ideas out there right from the start. These are important because I know exactly what I want, but don’t know enough about this discipline to express it intelligently with the appropriate nomenclature.

1. Grand Theft Auto: www.rockstargames.com (the marketing artwork, not the game)

2. The Sharp Brothers ( www.sharpbrothers.com )

Would you call it cartoon realism? Whatever it is, I just know that this is the style of drawing I need, delivered in digital format, in colour. Initially I’m looking for between 10 and 15 individual characters for which I will provide all the details; Look, age, height, weight, clothing, pose and background . The size would be about the size a no-frills Kindle screen, so about 16 x 12 centimetres, or around 5 x 6 inches, in portrait.

I get the impression that some of the drawings you see in this style are just digitally manipulated photos, while others are maybe hand drawn and then coloured in using Photoshop or some other program. Like I say, I don’t know much about the process, only that this is the style I’m after. I have a bunch of Jpegs I’ve nicked from all over the web if anyone needs more examples.

The Characters are all from a book called Origin, which will be published by my company, Millennium Birdhouse, in Feb or Mar of next year. They will be used for the online character profiles on the book’s dedicated website, as well as in the book itself. The characters are all everyday men and women, not superheroes or the like.

The budget isn’t enormous exactly, but nor am I looking for someone to “spot me” some talent until I can cough up. Good things cost money. That said, I’m not prepared to talk about sums until I’m convinced I’m also talking to someone who can do the job.

I posted this job on an online bidding site for freelancers and was inundated with bids and offers from people who didn’t draw in the required style, but were up for “giving it a go”. So I’m not looking for someone who might be able to do it, or who thinks they can, but someone who knows they can. I have no interest in qualifications, references or samples other than those that fit the bill, or are at least similar.

An excellent job on this will also mean more work, and more varied work, in the future, as it is a long term project.

If the person I’m looking for isn’t you, but you know someone who might be, I’ve got a crisp bullseye (£50 note) burning a hole in my wallet as a finder’s fee.

Thank you for your time!
