Artist willing to collaborate with SKILLED writer...

Post by Davidmartins.art »

Ok just to clarify, if you're a writer(amateur or pro) and youre not fully confident with your writing skills at the moment, this ad is not for you.

This ad is for writers that TRULY and STRONGLY believe they have a gem of a project/idea/story but are finding it hard to find an artist that will take a chance and devote time to their work in exchange for royalties.

Good, now that that's out of the way, if you happen to like my work and you think my skills are good enough for your amazing project, here goes my long rant, PLEASE read:

I'm a London based artist/animator AND an aspiring writer. I'm willing to truly devote my efforts and draw my ass off for your project/idea/story on these conditions:

- If I'm convinced you truly have a great idea and not only, you also have the writing and story telling skills required to execute it excellently

- If you're willing to split the royalties and rights of the story and all the characters created equally 50-50, basically 50% royalty/rights on the project, plus if I'm also allowed to contribute and make improvements where i see fit.

-If you're willing to loosely coach me in writing, and teach me pretty much everything you know about writing as we go along. As id like to learn from you.

-If your idea/story is a mature/adult and deep( has a strong but unusual message) action adventure story with interesting worlds and environments.

-If youre not lazy and can also devote time and effort to this as much as im willing to.

I have the art and Designs covered, ill also, colour and letter, all you have to do is write excellently, communicate with me and be flexible about my creative input.

We(myself and chosen writer) will be pitching this to image, i have also come up with several other ways to get our work out there that i Guarantee will get lots of reception, if we fail to impress image, rather than just going straight to shelf.

I also have a good amount of cash to invest in this, so i really want to go for this, and i want to get it right, i don't expect it to be a walk in the park, so I'm prepared to works my ass off as much as required to reach the goal i also think you should bring your exposure/marketing ideas to the table aswell.

Things i require:

I want a synopsis (1 page maximum) of the story idea, what happens, how it all plays out and eventually ends, if i like the synopsis, ill request to read the script/story.

If i like your idea, but i think someone else writes better, would you be willing to work with the writer i believe to be more skilled, in fleshing out your story while i draw? It'll end up becoming a team of three instead of two, but i think it'll be for the best.

If you're based in London, it'll be great to meet up and discuss the project we will be tackling face to face over cheap drinks :D

So let me get this straight. You want a pro, imaginative, devoted writer to write for you, teach you how to write, to be flexible in literary matters in which you're clearly an amateur in, and even be okay with you just working with someone else if you think they're a better writer? This is a horrible proposal, and your art isn't first rate in the first place. Reign in your ego and try again, because I'm a London-based, imaginative, devoted writer and I want no part of this.

you have 3 sequential pages in your portfolio, you need to add more and do less pinups in order to attract the right kind of writer. if you do have cash to throw into this project like you said, then why not offer a page rate? if you want to learn how to write, then you need to practice and you need to read a lot of comics and a lot of books (stephen king advice 101), I wouldnt suggest learning off of most of the amateur writers out there because most of them dont know how to write either and they might put you on a bad writing path.

I was laughing when I read this one here, and on Reddit.

Please don't take this wrong. I like your art, and it has a nice style that can become something good, but it is not anywhere near where you need to be to start dictating a lot of terms to people, even in a market where there are far more writers looking for artists than the other way around. I can see you're going to get there, though.

I'm not trying to hijack your thread here, but you bring up some very interesting points, and I would like to reply to some of them.

Full Disclaimer here: I run a writer/artist CO-OP site, and we're always looking for more writers or artists for our shared universe. And while I feel that most of what you are asking for is available on my site, that's not why I'm replying here.

The first thing in your self described rant that struck my mind was the question about royalties and rights. This next line is addressed not to you, but to every so-called writer out there looking for an artist: You see what he said there? 50-50! Allowed to contribute and make improvements! If you are looking for an artist and are doing any sort of back-end, and you are not offering what he's asking for, DO SO!! Period! No excuses!

Back to you, sir. Image should be plan C or D. Image takes very few submissions, and unless you know someone at Image who is going to give you a leg up, this is a lousy plan A. Same with Dark Horse, Oni, or any other 2nd tier publisher.

Finally, the bit about bringing in a second writer (and the wording of the post makes appear as if you already have this person in mind) is rather drastic, considering that you are already asking for better than average writing.

As mentioned here, and on Reddit, you might want to consider reining in the ego a slight bit, but personally, I found it somewhat amusing and refreshing.
