Artist needed. New graphic novel.

Post by Mason »

This is equal parts crazy and ambitious.

I have a script that's pretty much done right now. I'm formatting it right to make it presentable, but at the least the first part is done. I've even registered my copyright with the CIPO (Canadian Intellectual Property Office) in Quebec.
(I'm Canadian).

The book is best described as, "like 'Hamlet' but with super powers." I'm not saying it's a retelling of "Hamlet" with super powers. I mean the main character is a teenage boy who is very indecisive and has a lot of responsibility thrust on to him. It's also fairly feminist in many of it's messages/ social commentaries, and was approved by GLAAD.

There's a comic book store in Vancouver, BC, Canada who heard a brief description and told me they would likely be willing to sell such a book. Happy, even. And as I've been approaching publishers, they've been interested in reading my script.

So the reason this is ambitious and crazy is because the first book is 75 pages, and if it's successful, will have 3 other books that have already been written, with a possible prequel book, and if all goes well, could spawn an on-going series. The first set of 4 books will be aprox. 230 pages, total.

And, lucky me, I have an artist. The only hiccup is my artist has a bad case of the sad. She's going through some stuff and I want to work with her and right now she just needs to deal with that. And that's okay. So what I'm going to need is someone who wants to help this project get as far as a publisher picking it up, or failing that, something to put on to a Kickstarter to help fund a self publish of it. Hopefully by then my artist (who does believe in the story/ book) will be able to come back and see it through to the end. But for now, I just need some concept art that I can show people.

I can offer... Your copyright of your original art. Right now I can't pay anybody until either a publisher loves it and wants to pay me so I can pay you, or a Kickstarter does better than expected and I can toss some money to you. But as of this second, I can't honestly promise money. If you do want money (and I don't blame you if you do), the best I could do is one of those "if/ when this is successful" things. I'm willing to trade services. Need a writer for your book? I'll scratch your back and you can scratch mine.

All I need is just some basic concept art as PDFs so I can attach it to e-mails and such and send it to people who could make it into a book. I'll want to work hand-in-hand with you. A lot of the description will be in the script, which you'll get to see. I'll let you know what I need for concept art (some of the characters, and maybe one scene). In exchange for not being able to pay you, I won't use your art in the finished product. I have something fairly specific I'm looking for.

Wow. This sounds like a real winner.
(That was sarcasm).

And I realize I shouldn't even be asking this, but I'm at the point before my career begins. Like Stephen King before he was picked up by a publisher and all he had was a manuscript. Or any number of others. The point where The Rock had just $7 and was living in a van or whatever. That's me right now. My career hasn't started yet and unfortunately I need others to the point where the journey has started. If this was Pokemon, I wouldn't have even left my house yet right now. I haven't talked to the Professor yet. I need someone like you to tell me the Professor wants to see me. That's where we're at right now. If my career had already taken that first step, I'd be able to talk money. As it is, I'm at step zero and I feel really bad that I need to basically ask for free labour but I've been at step zero for a very long time. And there's two ways I get to step one: either I get help I can't afford at the discounted price of free, or I cry in the corner as I slip every more into an existential quandary and never even try as I accept that dreams are meaningless and entropy is inevitable. But the second one is more of a step back to -6. So given that I'm aware that what I'm asking is frowned upon, let's avoid the "you shouldn't do this" lectures. I want to pay you. I simply lack money.

Please get in touch if you want to hear more/ see the script.
Have a wonderful day.

Hey there

Post by BoydDesign »

So… I can relate.

I am 48 pages into a layout for a graphic novel because my life sucks right now and I am not getting enough graphic art jobs to keep me busy.

My wife thinks I'm crazy and I need a job, but she still loves me and puts up with me after 35 years of marriage.

My dad is dying about 100 miles away from me and I'm stuck earning $13 an hour for a guy who could really give a shit that just last year I was earning $26 an hour doing the same job.

But I digress. I would like to be busy and I want the comics thing so bad I can taste it. And, to top it off, I'm really good at it.

I just also happen to live in Bumf**k, TX (somewhere near Dallas) and nowhere near an actual publisher of comics, sci-fi, or anyone remotely interested in spending a dime.

So, I can and would LOVE to have a distraction right now and if you would like to talk with me, please feel free to write back after you have seen some of my stuff and know I'm not an idiot:
