Detectives investigating the disappearance of Tia Sharp are looking into reports of a driver who local residents claim had been trying to abduct children the day before.

Sightings have been reported of a man driving a white van bothering children in the New Addington area where Tia was last sighted.

He said: "We are currently examining CCTV at this time we have found no trace of Tia on the footage examined thus far but this is an ongoing process which will take time."

Tia was last seen leaving her grandmother's home in New Addington, at around midday on Friday.

She told relatives she was going to the Whitgift Centre in Croydon town centre.

Detective Chief Inspector Robin Bhairam, who is leading the investigation, said: "As we head into another day of searching, I reiterate our appeals for anyone Nike Air Max 2016 who may have seen Tia, or has information about her, to come forward.

"Of course if Tia herself is able to contact her family or the police, we urge her to do so. Her family are very concerned as it is wholly out of character for her to go missing."

Tia is described as white, slim build, 4ft 5in tall and wearing glasses.

The clothing she was last seen wearing is described as a yellow bandeau top over a white bra with visible cross straps, light grey leopard skin leggings and black and pink Nike high top trainers.

Police believe Tia had a small amount of cash with her, but no travel card and she did not have her mobile phone.

Tia is known to frequent the Croydon, Mitcham and Wimbledon areas.

Jasmine Hart tweeted: "Hey guys I really need your help! My 12 year old niece called Tia Sharp has been missing for over 24 hours.

"It is unlikely that she ran away as it is completely out of character which is why this has become so serious

"If you see her or know something, call the police immediately. Please help!"

Police made an appeal tonight for anyone who might have seen Tia since she disappeared to contact them or her family.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Scola, from Scotland Yard's Homicide and Serious Crime Command (HSCC), said: "I was with her family this afternoon and they are clearly very distressed."

He added: "There is no suggestion she left in a hurry at the moment.

"We understand her Zip (child's Oyster Card for public transport) was lost some time ago, her mobile phone was left at home charging.

"She just said she was going shopping."

He said Tia was not known to have a boyfriend and there were no signs she was having any trouble at school.

An area of land nearby was cordoned off and searched this afternoon after items were found, he said, but it had turned out to be a false alarm.

Asked about rumours of a white van or car and an attempted child abduction in the Nike Air Max Black Friday days before Tia's disappearance in the Lindens area of New Addington, he said: "There have been no reports to the police at this stage of a white car driving around or attempted abductions."
