Looking for a Dan DeCarlo style artist

Post by johnmduggan »

Just got my first project (based on a screenplay I wrote) going with a perfect artist and am now looking to start a second project (based on another screenplay of mine) requiring a completely different style.

I am looking for someone with a Dan DeCarlo style for this second project. Some (very slight) manga influence okay... but not my cup of tea.

The particulars:

This is for a multiple-issue comedic horror comic with zombies. 36 pages per book and I am currently working on Book 3 (and only halfway through converting the screenplay). I am most likely looking for 4 pages per month until I can figure out the whole Kickstarter funding thing.

This is for pay: a flat page rate, each group of pages contracted separately (as it is coming out of my pocket). 50% payment upon receipt of the signed contract and the remaining 50% upon final approval.

I supply ideas for page/panel layouts, reference scrap, and a detailed script to reduce the amount of irritating back-and-forth.

B&W line work, no line shading (again, look at DeCarlo's work). You keep your art, I require only digital files.

There is cheesecake, somewhat mature dialogue and references, but no sex or overt nudity.

Lastly (and most importantly): Please assure me that you can do the style by showing it in your existing portfolio. That's how I found the perfect artist for my first project here on ZWOL. I looked at a lot of artists' portfolios before I was lucky enough to find his.

Please keep in mind that while you may not be right for this project, your art may be a perfect fit for another project I may try to get going in the future.

I'll try to respond in a timely manner. Thank you for your time.

Hey John, my name’s Justin. I’ve been a graphic designer for over twenty years now, and an artist my whole life. In that time I’ve learned quite a few techniques in style, and a variety of mediums. From pens and inks to digital tools. I’ve worked with marketing agencies in creating ads, music videos, animations to even comic works. Below are a variety of tooning and comic styles I’ve learned that may come close to what you’re looking for. And the answer is yes I can do what you’re looking for. ;) I’ll send you my rates via private message. I’d rather not put them up for all to see.

These were art stills for a Beatles documentary film I worked on, a story of a PR Manager for them during the 60s; the goal was to mimic a Doug Sneyd feel mixed with a bit of Ralph Bakshi’s Cool World. They needed to be wide for camera and editing purposes:

These are unscanned illustrations I’m currently working on for a scifi/horror novel. They’re page dividers for chapters. They’re more highly-detailed works, of course, they haven’t been digitized just yet, but you can see I know a lot when it comes to setting up composition as well, light and shadow, character emotions, actions, etc:

Here’s some simple lined graphics and tooning done for brands with characters and logo designs:
