ANGUS
Book 1 Of "The Versus Universe"
By Ryan Desmond
We're in THE PAST.
A rustic hut-village is seen, as part of a greater, cleaner and more prosperous village.
This village is more torn-down. Strange smoke rises from various huts. While the greater village sleeps, this dirtier villages springs forth with life.
Monk-like figures are seen examining the sky and making calculations in the sand of the paths.
Carts of materials are transported to various rug-roof huts, with cauldrons of boiling mixtures that various ingredients are added to.
Blacksmiths forge weapons and shapes of various metals, causing different effects with strikes and heat - scientific effects, that greater monks write about in cow-skin books with blood-red ink goose-feathers.
In the center of the off-shoot village is the largest hut.
This hut is two stories high. The only hut with an "upstairs"
It's the warehouse of huts.
Inside this hut, which is quite well-covered, we follow MONK, who walks off the path and into the hut-warehouse.
He enters to a group of working monks, preparing concoctions, building devices, and exploring materials of the world with make-shift scientific apparatus.
Beyond the main room, MONK walks behind a massive curtain that leads into the HALL OF WORSHIP.
There stands STRANGER with his back to an audience of bowing monks. STRANGER looks to THE CLOCK, which is a massive, two-story high, three-wheeled piece of ticking and tock'ing machinery. There is a smaller wheel rotating atop a medium wheel, all rotating attached to a larger and greater wheel.
The clock has various ancient symbols drawn around the various cogs or hands of each wheel.
MONK enters the room, bows his head and approaches STRANGER.
He kneels in the main row of the hall, paying homage to his master.
STRANGER speaks, but does not turn.
STRANGER
What have you?
MONK
Sir, I believe it is happening. The symbols will align as predicted, and the event will happen here. We are in exactly the right place and this is exactly the right time. I have seen the monster.
STRANGER turns to face MONK. He motions for MONK to rise, and MONK does get off his knees and stand.
STRANGER's face is shrouded in the shadow of his cloak.
STRANGER
I assume this monster is not what we'd expect.
MONK
No, sir. Not at all. Angus.
STRANGER
Angus?
MONK
Tonight, Angus had a fight...
Flashback To Earlier
It's a clear, dark night. Lots of stars. We focus on the unpolluted, old sky. We can see the intricacies of our galaxy in the sky.
We are overlooking an old village of paths, roads and various huts.
This is the greater village of THE PAST, which our rustic village is attached to.
We're in a dark candle-lit tavern.
There are no tables in the tavern. The middle of the room has been turned into a make-shift fighting ring.
In the ring stands ANGUS. He wears nothing but a Kilt and boots.
He has an orange afro. He is mighty. He is a strong barbarian.
He fights VICTIM.
Surrounding the ring is a sea of drunk, screaming barbarians.
It's cozy, sweaty and manly.
ANGUS roars, locked in a wrestle with VICTIM. They struggle. They hit each other.
The barbarians cheer the fight.
They drink, slobber and roar.
VICTIM punches ANGUS in the face in three hits. A one-two-three combo, that ends with a viscous hook.
ANGUS looks stunned for a moment. He pauses. He realizes he's been punched in the face.
He's not happy.
ANGUS gets angry. He roars.
He punches VICTIM so hard in the chin that VICTIM's teeth shatter. The impact shoots up through his face, breaks his nose and blasts two jets of blood out of his nostrils.
VICTIM's eyes pop out - they don't burst out, they just inflate a little - then we see an x-ray of his brain smashing so hard against the top of his head that his upper-skull fractures and he gets a bald spot as a fist-shaped stream of hair flies out of his head, all strands breaking in half and they soar.
And that's that.
When VICTIM falls to the floor, drooling a pool of snot, puke and his own tongue - DUNCAN (the brother of ANGUS, another stereotype bad-ass-barbarian) screams:
DUNCAN
AAAAAANNNNNNGGGGGUUUUUUSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
And the crowd goes wild.
Then, Duncan starts collecting some gold coin from those in the crowd who bet on VICTIM.
Back to MONK and STRANGER
MONK
He's - gotten stronger. I've seen him fight many times. He's always been impressive. But tonight - i saw something - unnatural.
STRANGER
He's suddenly gotten stronger, more powerful.
MONK
And he's been here this whole time. Angus is the monster.
STRANGER
If that is so, he must have encountered the visitor.
STRANGER turns and looks to the clock. As he does, the larger wheel and the medium wheel align with the following symbols:
(artistic renderings of....)
1: Visitor from another world
2: Superhuman Monster
STRANGER looks back to MONK
MONK looks to a symbol on the smaller wheel that represents: The Hero, which will soon align with the others.
MONK
Then it's true.
STRANGER
Focus. When could Angus have encountered the visitor?
MONK
Any night. Any night after his fights. Everyone drunk or unconscious - or asleep...
Flashback to an earlier night.
DUNCAN is walking down the village path with ANGUS.
It's dark in the village but there's full moonlight in the sky. Clear night, lots of stars.
DUNCAN's arm is around the shoulders of ANGUS.
They are brother's. And DUNCAN is very happy about that.
ANGUS does love his brother, but is distracted. His eyes gaze to the wonderment of the sparkling heavens above.
DUNCAN is so happy, he doesn't notice ANGUS isn't paying attention.
DUNCAN is very drunk.
DUNCAN
You know...? Alright. First... Wait. Ok. Angus? I - ok. You're my brother. And it's not just the drunk talking, but I booze you. And I don't just go and tell anyone I love them, so I'm not drunk, alright? Alright.
ANGUS, looking at the sky, sees what modern day people would see as a satellite.
He sees a star, looking like the rest of the stars in the sky - but he sees this one, amazingly, moving. It's on a path through the sky.
That's new.
He is more than intrigued. He's never seen a moving star before.
DUNCAN
And you're the best. And I know that cause I know you. They say our land is under attack by an evil army. But we're barbarians. And you're the barbarian-est.
ANGUS sees the star slow its trajectory, and begin to increase in size. He is stunned. Amazed. He stops walking.
DUNCAN's hand slides off ANGUS' shoulder, and DUNCAN continues walking - not noticing that ANGUS is no longer walking with him.
DUNCAN
I mean - I'm rich. You made me rich. Tonight- you. Oh, boyo. I'm gonna eat forty pigs tomorrow, and you're gonna help me do it.
DUNCAN falls over drunk and passes out in a puff of path-dirt.
ANGUS watches the mysterious moving star.
We are now entering the Earth's atmosphere from the perspective of the projectile. We blast through the o-zone, past a wave of burning streaks, and into Planet Earth.
We scream toward the dark planet at night - we're in the past.... no electricity. We enter three seconds of screaming darkness before we see the ice caps of the mountains.
Just short of being impaled by the peak, we rush down the mountainside and onto the landscape of THE PAST.
Now, we're back to ANGUS.
He sees it crash-land in the distance.
In HIS distance - a walkable distance.
Off the path from his village, over those hills and just short of the horizon.
He can get there. He knows it. He walks toward it.
Over the hill, ANGUS overlooks the crash site.
There's nothing there but a hole - about ten feet deep and as big as a crop circle.
Grass singed and slightly burning - only as embers. No flame. Just a red glow.
There's nothing there.
Something crashed and got destroyed - or vanished.
ANGUS looks off into the distance.
He sees nothing.
Right where ANGUS is looking, we see THE CHEATER. He is a hooded, ominous-looking alien with a technology-based cloaking device that makes him invisible to ANGUS.
THE CHEATER watches ANGUS. ANGUS does not see him but looks in his direction.
THE CHEATER is curious. He raises his hand. There is a faint but distinguished blue glow from his hand.
ANGUS in enveloped in a shocking blue light.
Back to MONK and STRANGER
MONK
There must have been an encounter. Angus has changed. Soon, everyone will see it.
Again, MONK looks to the symbol of THE HERO.
MONK
It won't be long before he arrives.
STRANGER
Follow Angus.
STRANGER turns to face the clock and looks to the symbol of THE HERO.
STRANGER
And, yes, he is coming.
It's the next day.
DUNCAN is walking down the path with two barbarians.
They are walking through the village, toward Duncan's house.
DUNCAN
Their army is greater than I had expected.
BARBARIAN 1
Meaning what?
DUNCAN
They are four times the force I had predicted.
BARBARIAN 2
Four times?
DUNCAN
And they're evil.
BARBARIAN 1
An evil army four times what we had though. We'll, aren't you just brilliant at motivation?
DUNCAN
Prepare my horse. I'll be leaving tonight.
BARBARIAN 1
Leaving? Duncan? You'd run away?
DUNCAN
I know a man. A man with great power. He's fought this army before. I'll need you to prepare a fight with my brother for tonight as well. I'll need some gold to offer this man.
BARBARIAN 2
Will he help us?
DUNCAN
I've never met him. I hope he will. A fight and a horse. I ride tonight.
The barbarians nods and walk off in different directions.
DUNCAN walks into his hut.
DUNCAN
Angus?
DUNCAN sees ANGUS is not in his cot. He hears noise out back. He walks through the hut and into the backyard.
There he sees ANGUS, sharpening a brutal-looking hand ax on a flint wheel. BLACKSMITH is there watching ANGUS work. The entire backyard has been turned into a make-shift blacksmith's area. Holes have been dug up in the backyard, strange aparatus is rigged across the area and ANGUS finishes his sharpening, blowing on the blade of his ax and picking up the axes' twin he made earlier. He compares them.
DUNCAN
Angus, what is this? What are you doing?
ANGUS
I'm sharpening my ax.
DUNCAN
You called in a blacksmith and bought and ax? With what of our meat?
ANGUS
I didn't buy it. I made it.
DUNCAN
You don't know how to make an ax.
BLACKSMITH
Uh, well. As a blacksmith, as a professional, I've never known anyone else in my life who's known how to make a better ax. Duncan, you have to see this.
BLACKSMITH puts out his hand to ANGUS.
BLACKSMITH
May I?
ANGUS nods and hands BLACKSMITH one of his axes.
BLACKSMITH takes the ax over to a large rock-boulder.
BLACKSMITH
Duncan, look what your brother can do.
BLACKSMITH hits the rock-boulder with the hand-ax ANGUS made, and the boulder splits in half.
DUNCAN
My lord. Angus! You made that? You can make use these weapons?
ANGUS
I can. I can help us fight this army.
DUNCAN
That's bloody brilliant. Angus, I have to ride tomorrow and I'll be away. Can you make more of these weapons for our village?
ANGUS
Of course.
DUNCAN
Fantastic. Also, I need gold. Tonight, I need you to win a fight.
It's night time.
We're in a fight-tavern.
Drunk barbarians are screaming and drinking.
In the ring, ANGUS and ANOTHER VICTIM square off.
A.VICTIM throws a few punches.
ANGUS watches him move. Angus watches his rhythm, his style, when he blinks, when he breathes, where he sweats- and ANGUS sees an opening.
As A.VICTIM blinks and breathes in - ANGUS fires out a straight punch to his chest.
We see the muscles of ANGUS go into a form of overdrive. They work perfectly, and deliver the strongest punch ANGUS, as a human being, could possibly deliver.
A.VICTIM goes flying straight back, snaps through the ropes and falls dead, with a crushed-in chest, into the audience, knocking over a few members.
The cheering comes to a shocking gasp.
ANGUS, still holding punch-position, looks to his fist in a horrific surprise. He looks to A.VICTIM and sees him dead, then looks back to his own fist.
The crowd looks to the dead body, then back to ANGUS, and they don't know what to make of him.
ANGUS, horrified and confused, walks out in silence as head's turn.
We're in a barn.
DUNCAN is putting a saddle on a horse and making preparations to leave.
BARBARIAN enters the barn with a bag of gold, in a rush.
DUNCAN
That's a mighty fine lookin' bag of gold you've got there. I assume my brother won the fight?
BARBARIAN approaches, and looks worried, frightened and bothered.
DUNCAN
What's wrong?
BARBARIAN
He killed him.
DUNCAN
What?
BARBARIAN
Angus won the fight. He killed him.
DUNCAN
He - ? That must have been a hell of a fight.
BARBARIAN
He killed him in one punch. Flew across the room.
DUNCAN
Across the room? What are you - ?
BARBARIAN
(deadly serious)
Across the room, Duncan.
DUNCAN
Well, Angus has always been -
BARBARIAN
Duncan! It was unnatural!
DUNCAN seems confused and angry. He grabs the bag of gold from the barbarian and mounts his horse.
DUNCAN
I don't have time for your stories.
DUNCAN rides off.
BARBARIAN is left, worried.
ANGUS is alone, on the hills in the moonlight. He watches the skies.
He looks deeply into the universe. He sees stars, galaxies, black holes, quasars, and his gaze fixates on a single point in the universe - one black hole in particular. Amidst the chaos of his galactical visions - this black hole becomes clear. From the black hole, a brilliant red-orange quasar fires.
The black hole spits out the energy it devours from a nearby planet.
We zoom into the planet the black hole is destroying.
There, atop a large piece of floating rock - like a lily-pad drifting on a lava-sea - FIGURE stands, wearing LEGENDARY GAUNTLET.
Pieces of his world are being sucked into the sky. And there he stands - dark, mysterious and ultimately powerful.
Still alive - wearing LEGENDARY GAUNTLET.
FIGURE is sucked into the sky and burns up as he is thrust through the atmosphere and hurled into space.
Burning, yet still maintaining some sort of form.
He is sucked, along with LEGENDARY GAUNTLET, into the black hole.
Beyond the event horizon - he is twisted and annihilated into nothingness.
LEGENDARY GAUNTLET, however, is not destroyed.
It illuminates in a brilliant white-blue light that is so powerful it overtakes the red-orange glow of the quasar.
Now, ANGUS sees, somewhere else in the universe - THE BLACK HOLE WITH THE BLUE QUASAR
