New Writer Seeking - Artist & Advice

Post by Kayo »

Hello everyone,

The names James. I'm - obviously - a new writer ( at least to comics - not that I've ever actually been published either ). So, that out of the way, knowing a good number of people have already stopped reading - 'cause ... noob, right? I've begun writing the first 12 issue arc for a book I plan to write as an on going series. Admittedly, it's of the mainstream superhero genre, but that's what I grew up reading.. I love the idea of some super reality in which a single person can literally make a visible difference. Stories like that where some great super hero is up against immeasurable odds and somehow still comes out on top got me through some rough times, gave me hope that things always work out in the end - a thing that I still hold on to today. Not because some comic book told me so, but because it's kind of true. I mean...maybe the end result isn't ideal, but it's always within your power to make everything bearable again. So, that's what I want to write, stories like that.

I've probably started babbling by now. So. As of this moment I have the first nine pages of the first book scripted. I expected to have the first draft of the entire book done within the next week and a half or so. I've also got a complete synopsis of the entire 12 book arc, though admittedly I should probably rewrite that before sending it to anyone as it's just a three page paragraph - train of thought, they call it. ( There is also a timeline of the prehistory of the story, just a thing I did to get thoughts out ) However, I kind of think that would be the best way to see the idea. To see it in its raw form, so that we can work together as a team to perfect the idea into something we'd both enjoy and love working on. ( I secretly fantasize about this book lasting for years and getting movie deals and making us gaggillionaires, because who doesn't think of being rich sometimes? ) I'll just say if you're interested I'll have that ready to send, or I can - if I haven't already gotten it done - rewrite it properly.

I suppose I should say something about the actual story that I'm writing. Just for my own sake, I'm going to describe it rather vaguely. The book is something of a dark thing touching on the reality of inner city life from the perspective of two young men. There will be super powers, aliens, advanced technology mixed in as well because without...reality is just to real, too put it simply. Also most of the important scenes and main story will take place at night. I really want to create a super hero that young people familiar with inner city life can connect with. I'm not sure if I'm doing a good job of describing it, but we can discuss it in depth if you're interested.

Okay, last paragraph - I promise. Being that I am a new writer, I'm of course, like all amateurs should be, always looking for tips from other writers. Like...uh. What have you found hardest about writing a script? Or what types of things do you do when you've got a bit of writers block? How might you go about writing dialogue that feels natural? How'd you decide how many books a particular arc should be? Would placing clues throughout a particular arc that point toward the coming arc be too much for one story to handle? Was that question worded weirdly? You know, things like that and anything else that might cross your mind to tell a quarter of a century old writer trying to get his big toe in the door.

Well, if you made it all the way down here...
Thanks for listening(reading) to me.
