Hullo there, ZWOL!
There's something electrifying about the act of creation, isn't there? I suppose that's what we're all here for; to feel the rush that comes from bringing forth something from nothing, Ex Nihilo. And what's really special about comics is that we get both to keep our on voice (unlike, say, television or film, when a hundred things stand between conception and product) and we get to collaborate, shore up our weaknesses with the strengths of others.
I've long been a fan of the medium, and an avid student of it. While my professional career has taken me in a very different direction - one of hard science and hospitals (ask me about it!) - I've always had the urge to get down to the business of building narratives.
Lately, I've gotten quite serious about it. I currently have 3 separate projects in active production, and a number of others waiting in the wings. One of them is set to be published in an upcoming anthology from 8th Wonder Press.
I'm looking for an artist who is interested in a true back and forth, who is interested in pushing narrative and storytelling as far as we can go. I want to try something new, and daring, at least once every issue in terms of storytelling, and so far I've held to that. I really feel that even when we fail, we succeed if our ambitions are great enough.
While my work tends to run a bit larger than life, I'm open to writing anything so long as I'm allowed to find and create human characters, and explore universal themes. At the moment I have the first issue and extensive pitch documents written for...
- A post-Watchmen superhero story set in neo-noir universe a la Batman TAS that comments on the superhero genre and explores modern corportism.
- An urban fantasy ping-ponging between modern day new, 90s Belfast (during the time of the troubles) and modern iraq, exploring ideas of truth (and fire and ice demons)
I also have pitches and outlines written for a number of other ideas, focusing largely on science fiction.
I'm not going to claim to be some secret star, or that I know for certain I can get our work published. There are no guarantees. But I do know that I have a relationship with editors at DC, DC Digital, Vertigo, and Monkeybrain, along with a whole host of creators in the mainstream. I know that I can get the work in front of the right eyes, and believe that the quality is high enough, and the potential great enough, that the work will get picked up.
In terms of payment, we can talk. I'm a student, with less than no money, so much up front isn't going to be possible. That said, artists would get 100% of all profits off the published issues themselves, and 50% ownership of the IP in the event of any out-of-comics exploitation (movies, television, etc).
If you want to get an idea of my interests and writing, you can perhaps take a look at a blog I used to keep here: http://heshouldreallyknowbetter.blogspot.com
