Eh, text pages certainly exist in comics but not as replacements for actual pages, merely as supplements. The critically acclaimed graphic novel Watchmen for example gives us clippings to clue us in with certain backgrounds. The webcomic Erfworld also tells entire sections of the story through text, at times alternating between comic and text, taking advantage of the strengths of both mediums. But the feedback I've seen shows that comic lovers like to read comics not books. Unless your story is rebuilt from the ground up on merging prose and comic I don't think it is a good idea to even consider that option.
You can of course save the money, or simply create the comic a little at a time as you make more and more money at your day job. You can also promote your comic as a kickstarter, but that option is one I know very little about.
Here's an idea though, given that this is a hobby simply condense your story into a single issue story or simply write an "issue 1" Given that you're doing this as a hobby your options are limited since a lot of comic artists want "serious" collaborators whose sole purpose is not fun, but getting published. But given your dream of getting stuff drawn, from experience I can tell you that even getting a beginning or a condensed version of a larger story is very satisfying. Given that you're just starting out doing a huge graphic novel isn't recommended anyway since you're just starting out. And even if you did have oodles of money, doing a test run with maybe 4-8 pages is necessary to see if you and the artist flow well together.
Best of luck,

heh, as far as I can tell everything can look well in black and white but also everything looks better in color! But that's just me, given that you're starting out black and white will be cheaper by far. Go that route. Just be sure the artist you get works well with black and white, others I've worked with do inks that seem purposely made to be colored over
