Hello there

Recently i posted up a request looking for an artist for a project. I had some interest but had a few questions come my way so i'm reposting now with a few tweaks to explain myself in the hopes it might spark more interest.

The project is a dark historical fantasy set in ancient Mexico called Instruments of Darkness: Ghosts of the Great Forest, a 4 issue mini series that i originally started some 4 years ago now.

Back then i was pretty green and jumped straight in and spent a fair bit of money with one artist, character design, a kick ass cover and then actual pages. As we got going into the book the artist became more and more busy as work flooded in and eventually he signed an important and lucrative contract.

The artist pulled out and the project and more than a few dreams of mine were dead in the water.

Since then i was hired to write a comic series now signed by a creator owned publisher and i moved on to something else having learnt quite a lot.

Now going back to it these years later i hoped to resurrect it somehow. This time round though i cant pay anyone a page rate, my financial status has changed somewhat in the last 4 years. Having said that Titan Comics offer a cash advance so i can offer you a large % of that as well as sales.

What that % will be depends on how many people are needed to complete the team. If your art holds up in just inks then a colourist might not be needed and your slice would be bigger.

Please check out Instruments of Darkness's facebook page here.

as well as the signed project here..

I'm looking for an interesting art style, nice details and a strong inker.

I'm looking for someone semi professional that has at least some examples of sequential art, pin ups are great but not enough to get you the gig unfortunately.

If you think this sounds good and apply, great! thanks for that in advance but if you don't hear from me then unfortunately you haven't made the cut this time.

We will work on the first 5 pages, a cover and some concept design and submit to Titan Comics. We will agree on the finer points of the agreement before any work starts and i will do my very best to get us signed and get that advance straight into your hands.

So if your interested please email me at nrslack@googlemail.com

Please don't email me your page rates as that only tells me that you really didn't read the brief and your email will be ignored....unless your art really kicks ass and i might file your email away for when i'm rich. :)

Take it easy!

Just curious...you get any good leads? It's going to be tough to get solid and professional work with no budget for the art.

It has been tough sure and continues to be. I've had some interest and am in talks with an artist but i'm always open to more applicants.

Truly, you wouldn't believe how many artists, decent artists have said they are very interested in working with me and then nothing. My eyes are wide open.

If you follow the link to my facebook page, all the recent artwork there in black and white has been done on a zero budget. It's been hard work but i've built up a core group of of artists, letterers and designers that believe in the projects that i produce. But this project has been sitting on the shelf for a long time, i've already spent several thousand on it to no avail so i can't justify to my wife, spending that again unfortunately.

I totally understand. You have a very good story going on and the previous artist really nailed that gritty and dark look that a story like yours needs. But by the way and I am not insulting anyone and I don't mean this as a mean comment but there is no reason that you should spend a few thousand on a solid pitch. I've been on this forum for a while and I can tell you that what some of these artists charge is funny. By funny I mean that the end product is nowhere near polished or professional enough to merit a certain page rate.

Best of luck with your project. I would buy it.

Zwol is the first website that comes up when you google, Seeking Artist. It was my first life line when i first tried to find an artist some 4 years ago. Before this i had no idea where to find one other than stalking art colleges in the hope of finding a comic artist.

But yes, most artists that come to Zwol are not to the standard that i require for Instruments of Darkness.
Best of luck with your project. I would buy it.
thanks buddy!
