I want to get my own domain name, since my current page URL is waaaaaaaaaaay too long and not catchy at all. I suppose I could just look around on the net and try to find some kind of deal that doesn't seem like too much of a rip off, but does anyone have any helpful suggestions (like "hey, instead of getting your own domain name, why don't you put everyone around you out of their misery and end it all right now" or something like that)?

Ideally, I would like something that I can register in search engines in both the US and Japan, though I don't know if domain name makes any difference...

thanks in advance

p.s. I was just joking... I don't really have a death wish... unless you're paying a whole lot of money, and then I might rethink it...

The registrars get domain for $6 each. Keep that in mind; if you're getting no services from a company other than domain registration, there's no reason to pay more than $15/year. douglas-adams.com is costing me 10 euros per year, which is usually in the area of $10USD.

I'm paying too much, then. Where did you register that domain so inexpensively, if I may ask?

Thanks for all of the advice.

Does the cash that goes towards renting a domain name also go towards supplying you with space to put stuff on the web, or is that a different thing alltogether?

In other words, do you have to pay a seperate fee for the space you use?

By the way, I am in the process of a big "link" overhall which should increase the ease of navigation on my site. Hopefully this will be done in about another hour or so...

I got my domain from joker.com, a german registrar. Someones on OpenSRS should be selling them for $15 or so. OpenSRS is a registrar run by Tucows, where they sell domains to people for $10, who then sell them for whatever they want. Sadly, they don't have a list of sellers by price...

Yes, webhosting and getting a domain are two seperate things, but there are acompanies that offer both. I use warped.com for my webhosting, but that's just webhosting.

There are a bunch of places you can get both from. Prices for both will run from $50 or so per year and up.

All of the above is assuming that you actually want a real website all to yourself. If you don't, there are a few companies who will do it all for free or very little, then put ads on all your pages. I beleive Geocities can do that.

Oh, and if you use warped.com, but benb in as the referer

Should that be: "<b>put penp</b> in as the referer"?

Thanks for the info!!! By the way, sorry for putting this string in the "art" section... I just realized that I should have put it in the other section.....

Anyhow, thanks to everyone! I hope to have a fresh new site with a brand spanking new domain name soon!
