Instruments of Darkness: The Mask of Herne is a historical fantasy set in Dark Ages Brittany, i'm looking for a dark and gritty feel for a dark and gritty time in history.
The time period after the death of the Frankish Emperor Charlemagne has rather fascinated me for some years now. In particular the formation of Brittany and Normandy as regional powers, the first Dukes and Kings of Bretonnic and Norse decent and the battles they fought to gain power.
Chronologically The Mask of Herne runs along side the same time period as its sister project Ghosts of the Great Forest which is about 845 AD and the series starts with the main character, Alric ap Alun as a young child waiting for his male family members to return from battle, a historic battle between the first Bretonnic King, King Nominoe and the Frankish Lord Charles the Bald.
Later on in his life Alric becomes a Housecarl in the household of King Nominoe's son and heir,King Erispoe until his assassination by his cousin, Salomon who makes a bid to gain power through esoteric means and the aid of the mysterious Gallic Druid Almarchus.
Salomon, now given title as Duke and King of Brittany has his own Frankish problems in the form of Robert the Strong and both have had marauding fleets of Vikings on their lands. Both solve the problem of unaligned Norsemen by paying them to fight for them as mercenaries and bring these rival bands of Vikings into their households.
With them comes Edda, a Norse witch and follower of the Old Ways an ancient vampire that has come for the power Almarchus calls upon, the Instrument of Darkness, the Mask of Herne.
And the story turns away from epic battles to a deadly game of cat and mouse through the darkened Medieval city of Vannes and the battle between vampires over artefacts of the arcane.
I will be starting this story as a web comic with a mind to sell it eventually as a digital download then hard copy graphic novel. I'm starting from scratch and the only way i'm funding this is through my monthly wage so we will have to start slow with only one update per month. As traffic increases i can move the project to crowd funding websites and then things can go a little faster.
Eventually i plan to find a publisher and print hard copies.
Currently i can pay $50 per page. This will be just black and white, pencils and inks. i prefer traditional with some digital tweeks but its not a must. i'm looking for dedicated professional artists with an interest in medieval times. All applicants will be required to do a test page from the first act of issue one. Only the chosen artist will be paid for said page and payment will be sent within 24hrs of notification that they are successful.
If you have applied to an ad of mine before please apply again if interested and i'll send over the page of script.
