Hello all,
I'm looking for a collaborator to help me build on an idea I've been molding for a couple years now.
My secret origin is the same ol' song: I love comics and I want to make them. I've been on the scene for about five years writing reviews and columns for a legit site -http://comicsbulletin.com/?s=jamil+scalese . In that time I've worked on a few different projects, some beautiful failures, some still in development.
OK let's get to the juicy stuff:
The most important detail: Yes, this is paid work, i.e an up front page rate with an agreement regarding profit split on the back end.
Distribution plans: I would like to submit this to Image, BOOM!, Dark Horse, etc. What that normally means is at least 3-6 polished pages, but submission guidelines vary. I'm not very much into Kickstarter or crowdfund (at least at this point).
The comic is firmly a superhero story but built around a high concept premise. Very simply: "What if you were dropped into the Marvel/DC universe?" It's the comic version of Last Action Hero. I need a polished but somewhat neutral superhero style for this. Acting and comedy should be strengths as well as the capability to go big on the action. Something in the style of Stuart Immonen, Mark Bagley, Pepe Larraz, Oliver Coipel is what I'm looking for. The Hard Truth: Most indy publishers don't want to do superheroes, so the art's got to be pretty great.
Additionally, I need a collaborator who is intimately knowledgeable about superhero comics. Ideally, you should be able to identify the major tonal differences between the Golden/Silver/Bronze/Modern Ages, or explain the idiosyncrasies of the Marvel and DC universes. It'd help if you've read Grant Morrison. This story is very much a love letter to superhero comics and I need someone who knows them well, or at the very least is willing to read up. This might be more important than skill level.
I'm being coy about the comic itself and that's mainly because the premise is pretty simple and if my theories on the zeitgeist are correct Mark Millar will option this for film in about six months. I have a polished second draft of the 20 page script ready to go.
If you think this might be something you'd be interested in but are unsure about the commitment, don't worry, just e-mail (or PM) me and we'll talk. If you'd like to test things out I'm open to paying for character sketches to see if we can play nice.
Thanks for reading!!
-Jamil
