June 14, 2004-- The Webcomics Examiner premieres today as a monthly forum of reviews, interviews, and critical articles evaluating webcomics as a fine art. The free-access website is at http://webcomicsreview.com.
The Examiner was born out of a need for more serious and persistent attention to the potential of webcomics as an artform. The publication will strive to identify the most important new works, and further, to advance the dialog of what these works mean and why they matter.
The launch issue features a cover by 'Robot Barber' artist Caleb Sevcik, and an in-depth interview with 'Fetus-X' artist Eric Millikin. It includes critical reviews of 'The Right Number' by Scott McCloud, 'A Dog and His Elephant' by Ethan Persoff, 'Outside the Box' by Brendan Cahill, 'It's About Girls' by William G., '1/0' by Tailsteak, 'Streets of Northampton' by Chris Shadoian , and 'Sexy Losers' by Hard.
The Examiner's Editor-in-Chief Joe Zabel has previously written for Indy Magazine, and edited the Modern Tales webcomics anthology 'Longplay' last year. Launch issue writers include Mike Meginnis (Splendid Magazine), and A. G. Hopkins (also Examiner Associate Editor). The Examiner Advisory Board includes webcomics writer Alexander Danner, 'Toon Art' author Steven Withrow, and acclaimed webcartoonist Neal Von Flue. Von Flue will also serve as The Examiner's Art Director.

I wouldn't even call it controversy. It's more like needless message board flaming.
