Writer/Publisher looking for talent-every creative category

Post by pennydreadfulpress »

I'm new to the site, so I thought I'd take this opportunity introduce myself and hopefully meet a few new creative allies. I know this is a lot to absorb on a first take, so I apologize in advance for the lack of brevity.

My name is Dave Arhar, I’m based out of Cleveland, Ohio in the US. The name of my company is Penny Dreadful Press, or PDP. Under PDP, I have self-published two full length comics; ‘Gothic Romance’ #1, ‘The Faustians’ #1, and a handful of mini-comics including ‘Franklinstein: 36 Craven Street.

I’m looking for artists of all styles and skills; pencilers, inkers, colorists, letterers, logo designers, editors, web designers, and in some cases, even other writers, to help me continue to create great and entertaining comics. Whatever it is you do, I'd love to hear from you. Funding for these books, including financial compensation for the creative team, will come from creating crowd funded campaigns like those on kickstarter.com.

I don't assume that this gig is for everyone, but if you like what I do and see the potential, maybe we can do some serious damage together.

Right now, my focus is on 4 projects in particular, but I have many more books in development, so under the right circumstances, I may be able to shift gears, and move to a project that suits your specific interests. Below you will find a detailed breakdown of PDP's current publishing goals. In cases where there is a filled vacancy, (EI a creator is already attached to a specific book) it will be noted.

Of late, I’ve been putting most of my concentration on introducing my super-hero universe, and working on the follow up issues to books that have already seen print.

The 4 comics are…

969 #1 Uncle Samson and the Phantoms of Lost Liberty (USPOLL)
This will be a full length color comic. It is already in development with an artist/inker and colorist attached. The cover is complete. I'm looking for pin-ups and/or any material to help promote the series to prepare for its eventual campaign on kickstarter.com. There will be 3 issues in all. I'm looking for potential cover artists for issues #2 and #3. Many of the heroes to be featured can be viewed on my deviant art account at the end of this message.

Franklinstein: 36 Craven Street
Franklinstein is set in England prior to the Revolutionary War and asks the question,“What if Benjamin Franklin, not Victor Frankenstein created The Monster?” Based off a little known historical fact, and originally released as a mini-comic/preview, the Franklinstein ashcan generated a significant amount of interest. I'm initially releasing it in small 12 page chapters, and would eventually like to release it as a full length graphic novel. The script for Chapter 1 is complete with an artist pending.

Gothic Romance #2
GR is a PDP's horror anthology of broken hearts, and bloodcurdling horror. Issue #1 contained 3 short stories between 3-8 pages in length, but the page counts can vary. This is a great starting point for artists and writers alike. The cover for this issue is currently in development, but I'm always on the lookout for interior art, and fellow wordsmiths who want to play in the PDP sandbox.

The Faustians #2
The Faustians are a support group people who have sold their souls to The Devil. It’s a tongue in cheek adventure of self-help and sin, focused on 7 people seeking redemption in this world, and the next. I need both a cover, and interior art.

Additional PDP titles....

The Greys #1
This story, based in the American suburbia of the 1950’s, centers on an a-typical family who moves into a small California town, with one big secret. But are they really aliens from outer space, or something altogether more sinister? This books needs a logo, as well as an artist. I created an unpublished black and white mini-comic for The Greys, but it has yet to be released. I would like to one day make a full length comic.

969 #0 Freedoms Patriot
By far, the most popular character of my super-hero creations, Freedoms Patriot #0 will be a prelude to the main 969 kickstarter comic. This will be a short story between 7-10 pages introducing both the hero, and the legacy of the 969 Universe. It doesn't necessarily have to be released before the campaign for USPOLL, but it sure would be nice. Also, I'd like to develop it into its own series.

The Official Handbook of the PDP Universe
This book will be set up as homage to the original Marvel Universe series, and will include statistics and origins. All PDP characters, both from the 969 Universe (like USPOLL) and other non-superhero books (like The Faustians) will be represented. I’m looking for contributors for pin-ups to include in the book (stationary/ standing images), as well as someone to do a wraparound cover that will be featured before its release as a centerfold add in the 969 USPOLL comic.

Thank you for taking your time to read this! I'm looking forward to seeing your work, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Do you have any links to your previous kickstarters?

Crowd funding is an entirely new arena for me. Rather than pay on the backend, artists will be paid in full from funds generated from successful campaigns. This will be negotiated in advance, and factored into the budget of the production in advance.

Dan-thanks for the link-sent you an e-mail

Initially, I had 350 copies of Gothic Romance #1, and 350 copies of The Faustians #1 printed. Those books are now pretty scarce, and I need to have a new batches printed. I have yet to take any comics digital, but it's definitely something I plan to do with my books, old and new.

I suppose there are many ways to judge success, but considering the modest print run and limited exposure, I think I did pretty well. I have never pushed the books beyond my region, and I've only done a handful of shows, but I've been pretty good at getting exposure because (and this is just my opinion) my "ideas" have been so well received.

I am interested in finding an artist/publisher for my own creation, or doing a story sample for an already established creation. Can I send you a sample synopsis?

Thank you,

Ryan,

At this point in time, I'm primarily focused on getting new material produced for PDP, so you'd have a greater possibility of getting published by me if you focus on writing for one of my creations. But I'd be happy to take a look at whatever you have.
