Hello! My name is Blair Selph, and I'm the co-creator of a website called Octothorpic. I am also the writer of most of the works that the Octothorpic website will host, at least to begin with. I've gone to many personal friends and friends of friends for help in illustrating my main project, Crucible. Sadly, all of those plans have fallen through, so I'm here to ask the zwol community for assistance. Below, you'll find details about what the project is about, what we're looking for, and what you'll be getting in return.
Crucible is a going to be a long-running webcomic about a lot of things. Primarily, though, it's an exploration in world building, and how a large cast of characters will come to understand and try to change that world. That "world", in this case, representing the universe. In a mix of Fantasy and Science Fiction similar to the Thor comics, but falling harder on the Sci-Fi than the Fantasy, a group of human children will be inducted into this obscured space faring community, and uncover a conspiracy dating from the distant future that's come back in time, seeding deceit and chaos into the governments and cultures of the present by the behest of some mysterious higher power. While I apologize about the vagueness of that plot synopsis, part of the draw of the comic will be it's insane plot shenanigans, and revealing too many of those twists and turns would be a disservice to the readers. In fact, that's the most I've revealed about the broad strokes of the plot so far. The finer details, at least starting out, are as follows: It's 2032, and a group of three friends – named Bailey, Archie, and Draco – purchase some nick-knacks. However, they soon find out that these objects have special properties, and when an enchanting poem is spoken to the dolls, the artifacts explode into light, and a living creature that looks like said dolls appear in its place. Their search for the answers behind this is the main overarching objective of stage of the comic, and the hunt for said characters by shady people in cloaks is the background conflict.
If this story interests you, fantastic! Here's what we're looking for. The main desire (outside of having a good artist, naturally) is to have someone that can commit to a long run time. The comic will consist of 21 full page issues, and there will be many, many issues. We're hoping to have a somewhat consistent art style through the first section of the comic. I know committing to that can be stressful, but we hope you understand. Secondly, as far as art style is concerned, we're looking to lean closer to a cartoony style than a realistic one, at least for this first run. If you can't do a style outside of realism, that's OK! We're looking for as many possibilities as possible. It's completely possible that you'll be so good at your style that we wont be able to say no, even if it's not what we originally were looking for. Other specifications include desiring someone that can do line/ink/color/lettering, but we have someone else willing to do the inking and coloring. Lastly, we'd also prefer
Lastly, I know you're thinking about what we're offering for this job. Sadly, we're in the same situation as you are; starving artists. I know there's a portion of artists who dislike back-end deals, but at the moment that's all we're able to give. It's how we're getting paid as well. The specifics of the percentages are negotiable, if the mere thought of that doesn't turn you off.
If you're still interested, I'd love to have you contact me here. Also, if you want to read the first eight pages for the script of the first issue, here's a link, and if that doesn't work, here's it in text form: http://tinyurl.com/obahlte I hope to have one of you as a partner soon!
