Another 'writer seeking artist' thread... (NOT PAID)

Post by DanielBellComics »

So, here's another ‘writer looking for artists’ ad…

Before you read any further though, I just want to make it clear that there is NO MONEY UPFRONT. THIS IS NOT A PAID JOB. Please don't email me with page rates.

I'm looking for a decent artist (or artists) to collaborate on some projects. I am an artist myself but I have recently had a son, now three months old, and so I am unable to draw anything for the next year or so. If you have children yourself you'll understand…

I have four projects I'm pitching here, done in one graphic novels of about 50 pages. From my experience in comics I think this format would be an easy pitch to publishers and an easy sell to comic readers.

The four projects are outlined below and there's a real mix of subject matter. The artist(s) I'm looking for would be someone with experience in completing short stories and who is looking for something more substantial for their portfolio. As an artist myself I found publishers took me much more seriously after I had completed Defiant, a 90 page book.

Anyway, here are the pitches:

The Golden Idol: In Edwardian London a series of grisly murders draw renowned occult specialist Joanna Fischer to investigate. With the help of the local constabulary, Joanna investigates and comes face to face with a sinister cult and the demon they worship.

Suffragette struggles meet Lovecraftian Monsters in an action adventure mystery. Art style wise, I’d be looking for high energy the attention to period detail. this 52 page script is all ready to go and could potentially be the first volume of a series. I’ve had great feedback on the script from proofreaders and I really think this concept could be a big deal.

Where is Skinny Jack?: He was one of the most notorious mass murderers in American history but to this day, no one know what happened to the monstrous Skinny Jack. True crime writer Max Croutcher intends to find out the truth for her latest book by interviewing his mother, the equally monstrous Delores Fletcher. Through flashbacks, we see what turned a sick little boy into a mass murderer and finally answer the question left unanswered all those years ago. Where is Skinny Jack?

The art for this story will need to be expressive and really capture the emotion and body language of the main characters. There is a killer twist in this tale and is not for the squeamish. This is my attempt to produce a ‘scary’ comic, something that will stay with the reader for a while and i really think this has the potential to actually turn people stomachs. the script is pretty much ready to go and clocks in at about 40-50 pages depending on the artist's discretion on particular scenes.

Hel: After a violent storm destroys their fleet and blows them way off course, four Norsemen wash up on a desolate and barren island. They explore and find themselves pitted against an army of monsters and uncover a secret that will rock their small, enclosed world.

This script is written in its barest form and I would want to work closely with the artist in the design and development of the Vikings and monsters, write to the artists strengths. This is a brutal survival story and would require a lot of dynamic action scenes. Historical accuracy isn’t really important but getting down to the blood and bones of a fight is essential. This is Vikings vs. Monsters in all its brutal glory.

The Last Gun on Titan: Sci-Fi post apocalypticia. A loner's singular quest for revenge is sidetracked when he finds himself having to look out for a vulnerable teen, protecting him from the degenerative and mutated remnants of a failed earth colony.

The abandoned moon of Titan, now a graveyard for a once mighty fleet of starships, is the backdrop for this tale of redemption packed full of cool science fiction concepts. Art would need to be dynamic, tech heavy and dirty, depicting a world gone to rust and despair. This is a work in progress and I would work with the artist closely, playing to their strengths and art styles. So far this is plotted; it has a beginning, middle and an end. What happens in between isn’t set in stone and be anything from a 50 page stand alone to a five issue miniseries.

If any of these concepts sound like something you’d like to be involved with then here’s the deal:

No money up front. I simply cannot afford to pay artists.

What I’m looking for is a collaborator, someone to go in with 50/50 on ownership. Initially, the only commitment would be to complete 5-8 pages of artwork for a pitch package. If it gets picked up, great, if not, then if the artist wants to continue we could look at crowd funding or something similar. Hell, we could just sell online directly and cut out any middle man though I am fond of print. If successful and picked up however, any money upfront or back end would be split 50/50.

I know you've all read a lot of these ads before and you're wondering what's so special about this guy.

I'm a writer and artist and you can see some of what I do here:

I've also put together a small anthology of my short stories so you can actually read something I've written and to show that I know my craft.

I’m not too great at social media so it's not like I have a readymade audience but I have contributed to a number of different publications in different roles. My publishing credits can be found here:

I've been involved in the UK small press scene for the last ten years and I'm friends with a lot of the indie publishers. I have a good track record with producing quality scripts and i feel confident that with the right pitch package, we would be easily able to find someone to take on the print costs. I am very aware that the market is saturated and I am realistic about the odds of getting the attention of any of the bigger indie publishers so I plan to start small but make a big impact.

If you like the sound of any of these concepts and want to know more, then please email me at danielbellcomics@gmail.com with ‘Artist Ad’ as the subject line. I'd like to see some examples of your sequential work and know a little bit about your experience. If you have a preference for a particular project then let me know and we’ll take it from there.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks

Dan
