do away with dpi problems for ever!!

Post by gazorenzoku »

Thanks to everyone in this forum who offered me advice when I wanted to get a vector graphic software!!!

I figured out how to use Flash to make stuff for printing as well as the web. It is great! I still haven't got all the kinks worked out, but I pretty much have the basic method down.

I don't know if I'm a great tutorial writer or not, but I had to let people know about this, so here is how I did it:

Why would anyone want to use Flash to make graphics to print? Especially when starting with line art that they want to scan in? Well, even though there are some drawbacks to working with Flash, the great thing is that since Flash uses vector graphics, you can resize without changing quality. You can also export the vector graphic file at any dpi you want, as many times as you want, so you can create a 72 dpi web file or a 600 dpi high quality print file from the same vector graphic file!! It is fun and easy to work with, and you can do a little animation in your spare time....

Of course, there are other softares that do the same or similar things. The key point is to get software that can use vector graphics, and can change bitmaps into vectors.

Excellent news G. Where did you get a hold of Flash? I've been thinking about trying it out for animation purposes, but I just figured it was way too expensive.

I got it with a student discount. Educators are also qualified for the discount, so you should check into it. Macromedia's website has more details on who is qualified and how to get the discount, but the easiest thing to do is to call a really helpful software store and ask them. If they have experienced clerks, they should be able to tell you what to do.

Yes, I will only be eligible for this kind of thing for 4 more months, so I better use that time wisely.

But there are other methods for obtaining Flash even cheaper than the student discount... I just don't know them....

Anyhow, its a nifty piece of software, but if you already have something that can do vector graphics that you like, then there really isn't any reason to get it. I like it because you can scan in art, change it to a vector graphic, and then export the file at any dpi you want.

I changed a few things in the tutorial. There is a better explination of why you would want to use the methods I used, and a new image at the bottom.

......and a few more minutes later, another graphic at the bottom...

Have I truly lost it?

Good work here Vince. I read only the begining as I don't have Flash yet to be able to do the actualy details. I will be looking back to your site when (or if) I ever get it. I guess that's on my x-mas wish list as well as a tablet (sigh).
